Non-surgical solutions for droopy eyelids, bags, and other lower eye problems: Part 2

by Brandith Irwin @ Skintour

To the reader above, it really matters which exact filler was used, can you find that out and then write to me again? On a broader note, lower eyelids are trickier for even a good surgeon than upper eyelids. The patient satisfaction rate with lower eyelid surgery is less than that for upper eyelid surgery. Why? […]

Is your Skincare Making You Fat? The Truth About Xenoestrogens

by Jessica Gilljam Brown @ Tailor Skincare

Each and every day we come into contact with thousands of synthetic substances. Through the air we breathe, the food we eat, and most importantly… Through the beauty products we put onto our skin. The modern woman’s world is filled with toxins and synthetic substances. But have you ever considered what these toxins could be doing to your waistline? You might not think that what products you use in your skincare routine make much of an impact on your exposure to pollutants, but many of the materials you put on your skin can be absorbed into your body. This includes your perfume, make up, cleanser, moisturiser and serums. Your skin is just like a sponge. The problem with non-natural skincare Endocrine Disruptors are substances which interfere with your body’s hormonal function, and are found in most conventional beauty products. One particularly harmful type of Endocrine Disruptor are Xenoestrogens. Xenoestrogens are synthetic chemicals which mimic natural oestrogen — a type of sex hormone. Once inside the body, Xenoestrogens appear to be identical to oestrogen and trick our cell receptors, so our bodies think they’re allowed to be there. So, what’s the problem if they mimic something that’s already naturally occurring? Hormone balance […]

Interview with My Sunshine

by Sarah Studd @ Tailor Skincare

Welcome Sarah, creator of My Sunshine. Could you tell us how did your journey to developing My Sunshine start? It all began many years ago when I was experiencing fertility difficulties. A Naturopath introduced me to living in a more natural way. I started to assess both what was going into my body and what was going onto my body. I simply couldn’t find a sunscreen which I felt comfortable using. So there began my mission to develop a high performance sunscreen with no nasty chemicals which was also kind on our environment.   How does My Sunshine compare to other natural sunblocks on the market? I really wanted to make a sunscreen which was good for you, good for the environment and water resistant. Also of course it had to feel really lovely to wear. Further we’ve included antioxidants to repair & beautiful oils to nourish your skin. We engaged in extensive international research and local development to ensure My Sunshine met all of these criteria. So I suppose My Sunshine differs because of what we put in and what we left out. Oh and of course it is made with love here in New Zealand.   Why did you include antioxidant rich ingredients as […]

What The BLEEP Are Parabens and Sulphates And Why Should You Care?

by Belinda Nash @ Tailor Skincare

Since the late ‘90s I have been a staunch user of products that are labelled as containing no parabens and sulphates – from skin and haircare through to household products. Recently when I was chatting to someone about this, I realised I actually have no clue what either of these chemicals are, what they do and why I am avoiding them. So I am going to take you on my journey of discovery so that you can find out too.   What Are Parabens? These synthetic chemicals have been used in products, and food and drugs, since the 1950s. Parabens are synthetic preservatives to prevent bacterial and fungal growth. They are used in many of the products that we Western folk use everyday, such as toothpastes, shampoos, moisturisers, face cleansers, sunscreens, hair gels, foundations, toners, mascaras, shaving products, perfumes and deodorants. The most commonly used ones are methylparaben, propylparaben, isobutylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben and alkyl parahydroxy benzoates, and they’re often used together in one product in various combinations to strengthen protection against microorganisms. Oh, and they’re cheap, which is another reason why big manufacturers like them. Alarmingly, parabens in consumer products – like cosmetics – are not regulated because the FDA […]

Unpicking the myths around Cruelty-Free and Vegan products.

by Belinda Nash @ Tailor Skincare

Labels like “cruelty free” and “vegan” used in skincare provoke a minefield of information and misinformation, and at their worst, these phrases are used as shiny light distractions as to what’s really going on in some skincare products. While you think you’re purchasing the good samaritan of products, this labelling is definitely not an indicator of how natural your skincare may be. We take a look here. Let’s start with a few definitions so we know what we’re playing with.   What is Cruelty Free Skincare? Basically, “cruelty free” means that the product you buy is not tested on animals at any stage of the production process, nor are any of its ingredients tested on animals. But, that does not mean your product doesn’t contain animal byproducts, so they can’t really be guaranteed cruelty free. For example, the jury is still out on whether honey is cruelty free or not. In addition, by law, the Chinese Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) requires all internationally manufactured products sold in China to be tested on animals. And the most common brands you see on the shelf that are not cruelty free may surprise you. But while China remains a nearly $30 […]

The Gut-Skin Connection: How gut health is the key to clear skin

by Jessica Gilljam Brown @ Tailor Skincare

Your skin is your largest (and some would say most important) organ in your body. Unlike other organs, you can easily touch, see and check your skin health daily, so it’s a great indicator of what’s going on inside your body – especially your gut health. Acne, facial redness, eczema, psoriasis, dry skin, and rosacea are all skin conditions which can have the same root cause; poor gut health and gut function. So it makes sense that the health of your gut is fundamental to having glowing, clear skin! The gut includes everything from the mouth all the way through to the anus – it’s responsible for absorbing nutrients, housing both helpful and harmful bacteria and excreting waste. Making improvements to the digestive system has been scientifically shown to improve skin health, immune function, mood, and energy levels. So read on to discover why your gut health is SO IMPORTANT when it comes to clear skin, and get my top tips to care for your digestive health for glowing skin (they’re right at the end, so keep scrolling…). We are what we absorb Have you ever heard the saying “you are what you eat”? This common saying is not necessarily […]

How to adjust your skincare routine for overseas travel

by Skye Ross @ Tailor Skincare

You’re off on holiday, you lucky thing! You won’t know yourself once you’re chilling out poolside, but the getting ready part before a trip can often be quite stressful. However, it doesn’t have to be when it comes to knowing which skincare products to pack. We’re here to help! You have a comprehensive, multi-step routine at home, we get it, but unfortunately, you can’t pack your entire bathroom cabinet because otherwise, you won’t have room for shopping. When it comes to jet-setting, it’s all about efficiency; decide which products are a must, and which are a nice-to-have. You don’t need to take a mask on holiday, simply use it the day before you fly out and you will survive without it, or maybe you can treat yo’self by booking in for a facial at the hotel instead. Use as many multi-purpose products as possible. Our Tailor Polish triples as a scrub, mask and spot treatment. Or take the Tailor Oil Cleanse, for example – not only is it great for cleansing pores and removing build-up but it’s a makeup remover for eyes and face as well. Plus, it’s beautifully moisturising as a face, body and hair oil. It’s definitely the […]

What you Need To Know About Plastic Packaging

by Belinda Nash @ Tailor Skincare

You already know that we at Tailor Skincare think differently about skin. You’ll probably also know that we think differently about our packaging too, which is how our signature blue bottle became integral to Tailor at the beginning of our journey. In fact more than anything, we over-think about Tailor packaging because we care deeply about you, our amazing #tailortribe, and the world we live in. And we definitely plan to leave our planet a better place than when we came into it. So in April this year, you were the first to know that our sparkling new Tailor Polish, the magic merging of two of our Dry Cleanse and Tailor Masque, comes in our brand new, sustainable, non-toxic plastic packaging. And the same with the Tailor Your Blend active ingredients. But what you don’t know, because we haven’t told you yet, is that as well as being part of a holistic lifecycle – from plastic, to recycle, to plastic, to recycle again – and as well as being environmentally sustainable, meaning they that have a dramatically reduced carbon footprint (less packaging, less padding, more lightweight)… our plastic tubes are non-toxic to your beautiful bod. Yes, that’s a fact. Before […]

DIY Relaxation Facial Massage.

by Skye Ross @ Tailor Skincare

Few things are as relaxing as a luxury spa treatment but if you’d rather stay in, pamper your skin in the comfort of your own home with a self-facial massage. Beyond beating stress, facial massages have fantastic wellness and beauty benefits too. Known as a lymphatic facial flush, your skin will be left looking radiant as blood circulation is stimulated and toxins are removed from the body. You glow, girl! It’s also the ultimate au naturel anti-aging technique as it invigorates collagen production. Collagen is the ultimate power player when it comes to the face – it repairs, strengthens and provides muscle tone. Collagen decreases with age which is why we get wrinkles, but by engaging in a daily self-facial massage your skin will appear tighter and youthful for longer. Begin by cleansing the skin with Tailor Oil Cleanse (Winner of best cleanser 2017). Focus on removing makeup and then gently remove with a warm, damp facecloth. Gently apply a light layer of Tailor Oil Cleanse or your fave facial oil using your fingertips. Start your massage on your lymph area under your ears on the sides of your neck. Move along the jawline with wide, circular sweeping movements, starting […]

Interview with Carmen Huter

by Carmen Huter @ Tailor Skincare

What inspires you to travel? My curiosity to discover the new. New cultures, challenges and landscapes. I travel to learn more about society, myself, my profession, and other people. Travel teaches me to seize the moment, be passionate, and, simply put, enjoy life and stress less. 🙂   Where is the most spectacular place you’ve been so far? This is the question I get asked most commonly and I still don’t have an answer for it. I often say China, as backpacking through its Northern and Western territories in the middle of winter was gnarly to say the least. I also think that Chinese landscape is often underestimated, and, in fact, some of the most beautiful in the world. New Zealand isn’t too bad either 😉   What’s the best animal encounter you’ve had while traveling? A roaring moose chasing down his female counterpart in Canada. On a side note, I will travel through several African countries later this year and I’m pretty sure I’ll cry the first time I’ll see a wild elephant. Or lion. Or zebra. Oh god!   What do you eat on the road and how do you find out about places to eat? I love […]
