Face Facts: Your Complete Guide to Sensitive Skin Care

Face Facts: Your Complete Guide to Sensitive Skin Care

Blog

Sensitive skin is becoming more common. The rising incidence of food allergies and intolerances, as well as changes to the environment, have seen an increase in people citing sensitivity as a skin concern.Skin sensitivity can manifest in different ways at different times, making it sometimes difficult to identify and treat. The good news is that sensitive skin can be soothed and managed with the right approach to skin care.Let’s take a look at the symptoms and causes of sensitive skin. The telltale symptoms of sensitive skinDrynessTightness, particularly after cleansingRedness or blotchinessIrritation – during a reaction, symptoms can include: itchiness, visible rashes or hives (welts on the skin), swelling, and a tingling, stinging or burning sensationIn addition, signs of sensitive skin can also include:BlemishesPremature ageing (due to dryness) What causes sensitive skin?AllergiesSudden skin sensitivities can be caused by a reaction to an ingredient or product. This could mean you have an allergy, even if a product hasn’t troubled you before. People can develop allergies with exposure over time, so it’s best to check in with a doctor just in case. Dermatologists can conduct a simple and effective skin patch or prick test, so you can learn which ingredients to avoid to find the right skin care products for you.Medical conditions and medicationsMedically diagnosed skin conditions like dermatitis, acne, psoriasis, rosacea and eczema increase the likelihood of skin sensitivity. Once you’ve identified skin care products that are safe for use, being consistent and diligent about your skin care ritual will help manage any symptoms. Some medications can also increase skin sensitivity, especially with exposure to the sun. Common culprits are certain antibiotics and painkillers, so always read the information on the pack or ask your pharmacist – you may need to take extra care and stay out of the sun during treatment.EnvironmentEven normal skin can become sensitised when faced with heavy pollution or excessive sun, heat, humidity, air conditioning, cold, wind, rain or snow. For example, you may notice your hands and face feel drier and more sensitive during winter. Ensure adequate hydration, both inside and out – make sure you drink lots of water, and apply a rich moisturiser to protect your skin against the elements.GenesNaturally sensitive skin is often an inherited genetic trait, just like other skin types (including dry skin). Many of the medically diagnosed skin conditions listed above are also genetic to some degree. If you’ve had a predisposition to sensitive skin for a while, it might be time to visit your doctor.LifestylePoor nutrition, alcohol, smoking, stress, dehydration and even use of harsh chemicals like household cleaners can all sensitise skin over time. Elimination can help identify external aggressors to avoid. What you wearFinally, clothing and jewellery can affect sensitive skin. Coarse fabrics like wool often irritate, as well as the chemicals found in laundry products such as washing powders and fabric softeners. Nickel, a metal found in costume jewellery, has also been known to trigger contact reactions.Swapping materials for natural fibres like cotton and bamboo, as well as using laundry solutions suited to sensitive skin, may help. With jewellery, remove at bedtime and buy stainless steel or sterling silver (and not just plating) to protect yourself against possible irritation.AgeingAgeing skin and changes in hormone levels can cause skin sensitivity. While some aspects lessen with age (e.g. blemishes), some others increase (e.g. dryness) as skin layers weaken and become more fragile. How to manage sensitive skinCleanseJust like all skin types, sensitive skin needs cleansing too. A gentle cleanser for the face like our Soothing Foaming Cleanser helps remove impurities and rebalances sensitivity with the power of Lavender.Using gentle products with natural ingredients will protect the skin against environmental aggressors, preserving the skin’s natural defences.SootheLook to specially formulated products like our Masks to help reduce redness to hydrate and soothe skin.HydrateA light moisturiser in warm weather will ensure optimal balance and hydration for sensitive skin. Our Soothing Day Care Lotion is a light-textured moisturising lotion to help calm and protect against daily environmental aggressors. For overnight protection, deeply hydrate and soothe sensitive skin with a serum like Calendula Redness Rescue Restorative Treatment Serum. This helps provide a natural protective barrier and restore the skin\'s epidermal defences.Of course, don’t forget to keep up your water intake, too.AvoidSeek out natural skin care products, without common irritants like artificial colours and fragrances.Steer away from harsh exfoliants as they can aggravate sensitive skin. Pat, don’t rub, your face and body after showering, and finish with a lightweight moisturiser.Discard and replace any old makeup or skin care products, as well as medications or other topical treatments past their expiry date.TestIf you have sensitive skin, it’s always a good idea to patch test any new products before using them – especially if they contain unfamiliar ingredients. If you’ve never done this before, please consult your doctor. Key natural botanicalsCalendulaKnown for its bright yellow and orange flowers, Calendula has pronounced soothing properties and is used to rebalance sensitivity on the skin and throughout the body. Calendula is excellent for calming, restoring and hydrating sensitive skin. Our Calendula Redness Rescue Soothing Moisturising Cream with Comfort Complex deeply hydrates and soothes, while protecting skin from environmental aggressors.ArnicaThe Arnica plant has a bright yellow, daisy-like flowers that has been used in homeopathic medicine for hundreds of years. Arnica is typically applied to the skin to soothe sensitivity, helping to rebalance and cool delicate areas. Our Arnica Cream helps soothe and calm the skin.LavenderWidely celebrated for its calming properties, Lavender is a hydrating and calming extract, used to rebalance dryness on the skin, leaving it soft and refreshed. Lavender’s characteristic fragrance is often used to promote restful sleep and aromatherapy relaxation. While it’s a complex and dynamic skin type, sensitive skin is usually very manageable. It just takes the right skin care approach to soothe, comfort and maintain that all-important balance for sensitive skin.Shop the Story: Sensitive Products

We’ve been talking about skin types here the last few weeks—dry, oily, and combination. But this week, we’re talking about a type that can co-exist with any of these. In other words, you can have combination skin, and also have sensitive skin. Dry skin types are the ones who are most often plagued with sensitivity as well, but combinations may have it too. It’s more rare in oily skin. In the world of skin care, being “sensitive” doesn’t mean that you’re feelings are easily hurt. Instead, it means that your skin can be easily affected, and has a definite set [...]

Well Beauty Blog - Smooth and mended skin

by @ Blissoma Holistic Skincare and Apothecary: Blog Posts

Well Beauty Blog reviewed Blissoma's Smooth A+ Correcting Serum and Amend Facial Solar Repair Serum this summer. She loved them both and had plenty to say about the formulations and how they worked for her.

About Smooth A+ Perfecting Serum she says this...

"Within a few days, red bumps and irritation were gone! This was a month ago and my skin continues to look better every day. My major skin concerns are uneven skin tone, redness on my nose, cheeks and chin, and breakouts around that time-of-the-month. This has helped all 3. My skin looks much more even-toned with less redness (more into why in the ingredients below) and my breakouts are even fewer."

And about our Amend Facial Solar Repair Anti-Aging Serum she is equally happy...

"After applying this right after and then again before bed, I found my skin was less red and irritated than it usually is after getting too much sun. Most of my sunburn was completely gone by morning. One more day of applying the serum and my sunburn was completely gone! Now for you tan ladies, you probably have no idea why this would be impressive. But my fair ladies know – a sunburn gone in 24 hours? That’s pretty amazing." - Cori

Eczema, Seborrheic Dermatitis, Psoriasis – Managing the Itch

by Vanicream Admin @ Pharmaceutical Specialties, Inc.

When the skin reacts to allergens or irritation, skin cells produce various inflammatory chemicals that cause skin to become red, swollen, and itchy. Benefits of Hemp Seed Oil for Skin

by @ Blissoma Holistic Skincare and Apothecary: Blog Posts

The medical benefits of the cannabis plant have it gaining popularity. It can relieve chronic pain, ease anxiety, and offer an insomniac a decent night’s rest. No longer widely stigmatized, cannabis is reaching mainstream markets in the form of chocolates and sprays. One time-honored variety of cannabis is the hemp plant which lacks psychoactive compounds. Hemp seeds produce a valuable oil that is an ideal addition to natural skincare products.

Hemp in Skincare

Hemp, a cannabis variety, offers a powerhouse of nutrients in the oil pressed from its seeds. There is a lot of discussion in natural beauty circles about plant oils, and rightly so. They offer excellent regenerative benefits. Because hemp seed oil is rich in antioxidants, fatty acids, and minerals and is unlikely to cause allergic reactions we consider hemp seed oil to be one of the best oils for skin. Hemp oil has a comedogenic rating of 0, meaning it will not clog your pores. Your skin will maintain elasticity and softness, thanks to the essential nutrients present in hemp oil. Hemp oil is even recommended as a top natural oil to soothe psoriasis and eczema, as it reduces redness and inflammation.

Adding hemp oil to your skincare is a no-brainer, especially if you have irritated skin or eczema. It is one of the best oils for skin, and can deliver you more balanced skin in just days.

It's important to use only unrefined, raw, cold pressed hemp seed oil. Many commercial skincare lines shy away from using this fragile oil in their recipes due to a shorter shelf life and low heat tolerance. Mass market lines often use refined hemp seed oils which are stripped of valuable nutrition, and processed to a totally colorless, odorless appearance. The refining process can cause the oil to partially oxidize as well, making it already partially rancid by the time it hits your skin or hair. This makes their hemp seed oil mostly a marketing claim and even possibly bad for skin!

Raw, unrefined hemp seed oil is carefully sourced from the presser and has a beautiful green color to it. It should be kept under refrigeration until it is blended with more stable oils that can help keep it fresh for a longer period of time at room temperature. A good quality oil is never heated during creation of the finished product. The finished product may have an amber or green hue to it from the color of the natural oil.

You should also look to see if the oil appears at the very end of the ingredients list, or up towards the top. Ingredients are listed in order of concentration in the formula and the last few ingredients are generally only in the last 1% of the recipe. That's not enough to make a measurable difference to the appearance of skin and hair. Look for hemp seed oil to appear in the initial or middle portion of the ingredients list for higher proportions.

Want to get your hands on skincare with ultra-nourishing hemp oil? Try our Restore Deep Healing Oil Serum or Flawless Equalizing Anti-Blemish Oil Serum.

Organic Spa Magazine says mushrooms are a breakthrough in anti-aging skincare and recommends Lavish Loving Recovery Beta-glucan Mask

by @ Blissoma Holistic Skincare and Apothecary: Blog Posts

"Breakthrough ingredients and new formulations are the secret to ageless - and beautiful - skin."

Organic Spa Magazine covers the best natural, spa quality skincare and in April 2014 Blissoma received a feature for our use of medicinal mushrooms in Lavish Loving Recovery Beta-glucan mask. Writer Celia Shatzman says, "Now, thanks to the meteoric rise of green cosmeceuticals, there are plenty of options that incorporate potent natural ingredients to deliver powerful results."

"Packed with vitamin D, selenium, and antioxidants, mushrooms safeguard skin from discoloration and their anti-inflammatory properties help with rosacea, acne and eczema."

Blissoma's herbal chemist Julie Longyear was quoted on the benefits of Beta-glucans, which are complex, immune stimulating polysaccharides found in mushrooms.

How to Treat Diarrhea in Cockatiels

by @ How to of the Day

If your cockatiel is sick, it's important to spot the sickness right away. In the case of diarrhea, this can be hard to spot in birds. Their droppings are naturally runny, as they contain both feces and urine together, so gauging when it is unhealthy can be hard. However, by assessing their droppings on a regular basis, looking for other signs of illness, and getting them proper veterinary care, you can quickly and effectively treat diarrhea and its underlying causes in cockatiels.

What you can do about stubborn blackheads on the nose, chin, etc.

How sugar affects skin health and may be causing skin problems

by @ Blissoma Holistic Skincare and Apothecary: Blog Posts

In today's society it is a rare person that does not know the pains of sugar addiction.

It’s 2:00 PM in the office. Like clock work, your sweet tooth kicks in. “Are their still donuts in the kitchen?”

Ten minutes later, you’re still distracted by your ravenous cravings.

No, you don’t need a donut” you tell yourself-“but you’ve been so good this week…”

Seconds later, sugar wins the battle and a scrumptious chocolate eclair is inhaled…you even question if you should have another. You already ate one donut, might as well eat a second, right?

Sugar addiction is one of the reasons some people argue that sugar should be regulated, similarly to alcohol and tobacco. That second donut (or third) could lead to substance abuse, causing a slew of health concerns including skin problems. As it turns out sugar is the enemy of natural beauty!

Because our brains evolved to crave it as a potent source of caloric fuel this addictive and dangerous substance has become a staple in the Standard American Diet. It is now far more available than ever before in human evolution. It is cheap to purchase and is front and center in snack displays as well as hiding in many processed foods.

The truth is ugly. Common risks of sugar consumption include cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Too much sugar consumption inevitably leads to weight gain and can even make you age faster, meaning more wrinkles and sagging skin

If you are consuming high quantities of sugar your skin health is definitely suffering. You may see this show up in your skin health as skin problems like acne, rashes, and even eczema. These disruptions are trying to tell you that your body is out of balance.  Sugar feeds detrimental bacteria in your small intestine and can cause insulin resistance.  This sets up a whole range of inflammatory reactions in your body.

Because of the availability and clever marketing of sugary foods most people are unaware of the health hazards they face as a result of sugar consumption. The risks are well-documented in scientific literature, though.

Despite the potential consequences, the average American consumes 135 pounds of sugar per year!  In nature, sugar is an uncommon substance, and is found mainly in fruit which is only available when they are ripe and in-season. In the modern world sugar is hard to avoid and is available 24/7 and 365 days per year. Sugar can be found in your breakfast cereal, pasta sauce, fruit juice, and even salad dressing. In fact, its hidden in most of your processed foods.

The only way to change how sugar is affecting your skin health is to eat much less of it. As you taper off you may see your skin become brighter and more clear and firm. Over time you will save yourself years of skin aging by reducing your sugar consumption. This is as important of a step as using a good quality skincare product.

Everyone indulges once in a while but it's important to keep perspective and balance. By teaching ourselves to enjoy foods that are unsweetened we appreciate the actual flavors of our foods more and free our mind and body of addictive cravings.

Do you see any changes in the quality of your skin when you consume sugar? Do you think that sugary foods have any place in your natural beauty lifestyle? How will you take steps to improve your quantity of sugar consumption?
