Getting Ready for Autumn: Skincare

by Ykkinna @ Life in a Cold Climate

I own a lot of skincare and generally, I’m fine with that. I do, however, go through buy-purge cycles on a regular basis. More than spring, autumn is when I feel like organising my stash and getting rid of stuff. And then, inevitably, buying new stuff, because autumn is when many skincare launches happen. This year, I have an added incentive: work is tough, so I want to have things figured out and an edit of outstanding products always on hand and ready to use. I will still experiment and change things up, but that’s not a priority for the moment. Therefore, I’ve taken a long hard look at my skincare products and selected my absolute favourites – and also identified what I still need (I use the word „need“ loosely here) to buy. I haven’t given everything else away (although I have given away a rather scary amount), just made sure I have what I want in every category and it’s visible and easy to reach. I plan to do – and have already started – the same process with makeup, clothes and perfumes and I’ll write about that in the coming weeks as well. 1. First cleanse. I seem to prefer oils to balms these days and De Mamiel Pure Calm Cleansing Dew is my current favourite. I love it – the texture, the smell, the performance. I have also ordered the new Eve Lom Gel Balm Cleanser: the original is great, but I have a feeling I’ll like this one even better (hybrid texture!). 2. Second cleanse...

The Pink Dress: Reflections on Wearing Colour

by Ykkinna @ Life in a Cold Climate

There are several entirely rational reasons for not wanting to buy and/or wear colourful clothes: they date faster than neutrals; you tend to get tired of them quicker; they are more difficult to combine with other items of clothing. Often, bright colours are more demanding to wear than navy or beige. Sometimes they even cost more than „normal“ stuff. On the other hand, colour is one of the great joys of life. Colours are gorgeous. They can be cheerful, but also luxurious, romantic or intimidating. I can imagine very few things more intimidating than head-to-toe sharp tailoring in red. There are so many colours that there’s something for everyone. Even if you are a committed colour-phobe, you might be obsessed with the right kind of black or find different shades of grey disturbingly attractive. Where I come from, wearing colour is not the norm. People often tell me that they love a particular forest green or a certain pale lilac, but could never wear it. It’s usually not explained why that is, but I sense unspoken references to the wrong skin tone, to the fear of seeming inappropriately fond of attention, to Northern temperament, to taste that is too superior to be distracted by frivolous colour. You know what? I’m not a natural colour-wearer either. My formative fashion years were in the beginning of the 90s – not a good time for colour. For ages, my idea of being daring was dusty pink (still love it). Over the years, this has changed. It’s partly certainly because I cannot remain untouched..

5 SECRETS OF THE JAPANESE SKIN CARE

5 SECRETS OF THE JAPANESE SKIN CARE

Mogul

Japan is the undisputed realm of cosmetics. It is not surprising then that Japanese women are the best "educated" women in terms of beauty and cosmetics (as they enter this fascinating world from an early age), and of course, the Asian woman is without It is doubtful that the highest expenditure per capita is made in treatment and make-up products.Asians lead the world beauty market and serve as a model for Europeans. How much is spent ...According to the latest data, the Japanese holds the world record of the women with the highest average per capita expenditure on cosmetics. Thus, Japan spends an average of 136 € per year in this type of products, of which, 86 are for treatment, 37 for makeup, 10 for capillaries and 4 for fragrances (it is widely known that perfuming is not very common in the Japanese culture because it involves an invasion of the terrain of the other).Asian rituals for perfect skin.It seems that the Japanese found the source of eternal youth and is that their skin is not only considered the most beautiful in the world, it is one that remains luminous and impeccable despite the years. It is said that the skin of oriental women, especially Japanese women , takes 10 years more to show wrinkles than that of Western women. While genetics has benefited from thicker dermis and increased collagen production, it is also true that they invest in Japanese Skin Care through strict care, specific beauty rituals, healthy eating and following natural and ancestral techniques Typical of their culture. But what are their secrets? Here we reveal some of the most famous secrets and rituals:1. Cleaning And MoisturizingFor them it is essential to eliminate the makeup and everything that can contaminate your skin, especially before bed. Most use natural oils such as olive and argan and complement their routine with products such as milk cleanser or micellar water .Before moisturizing your skin or using any treatment, practice a technique called Otefuki , which consists of applying towels with hot vapors to which they add drops of aromatic oils such as lavender or rosemary to open the pores of the face and get them to penetrate into the Deeper layers of the skin. Further,2. MassagesThey have different massage techniques that incorporate 2 or 3 times a week. For example, the Eishodo or Tanaka massages . They replace cosmetic surgeries because they stimulate circulation, clean the lymphatic system and exercise the muscles of the face. This helps prevent the first signs of aging.3. Sun ProtectionIn Japanese culture, white skin is synonymous with beauty. So contrary to the tan that we look for in the West, in Japan women protect themselves a lot from the sun to avoid staining and losing collagen and elastin. For them, sunscreen is a staple in their beauty ritual at any time of the year.4. TeaThe tea green and white are staples in your diet. They have a high content of antioxidants, therefore, they help fight free radicals and premature aging of the skin. To start taking it, start with one or two cups a day and then increase your intake. If you drink coffee , green tea is an excellent substitute.5. FoodThe Japanese are a clear example that the skin should be taken care of inside and out. Their food is more alkaline and the fats they consume are mostly good fats like Omega-3 that comes from fish. Another key ingredient is wakeme seaweed which, in addition to providing vitamin B, calcium and potassium, preserves hyaluronic acid, vital for maintaining skin elasticity.

Japan: Drugstore Skincare Haul | Life in a Cold Climate

Japan: Drugstore Skincare Haul | Life in a Cold Climate

Life in a Cold Climate

My skincare tends to be quite spendy, but there are exceptions (most notably this). And there was no way I would leave Japan without buying some of their legendary drugstore skincare, because SCIENCE. Curiosity is not only responsible for cat deaths, but also huge sums of money I’ve spent on beauty products. So here’s what I got, with my first impressions: 1. DHC Deep Cleansing Oil. The Japanese are serious about double cleansing, which there usually means an oil to remove makeup followed by a foaming cleanser to cleanse the skin. The DHC oil is probably the best known first step cleanser and popular also outside of Japan. It’s olive oil based and works well, but it doesn’t rival my absolute favourites – Tatcha and Caudalie oils. DHC has been on the market for a long time and I feel the formula shows its age a bit: it’s thicker and less elegant than some of the newer ones. 2. Shiseido Senka Perfect Whip cleanser. In Japan, Perfect Whip is everywhere. If DHC is a beloved first cleanse, Perfect Whip is probably the best seller for the second step (and much cheaper than the oil). I don’t like foaming cleansers and although the Japanese versions don’t include sulphates, this one hasn’t changed my mind. You need to lather it up before using it, not on your face, and that’s too much fuss for me (it takes time and/or special tools). And it has a crazy high pH, not good news for your skin. 3. Cure Natural Aqua Gel. Another extremely popular..

12 Japanese Skincare and Makeup Products Every Beauty Junkie Must Try – Japan Info

Japan Info

Cosmetics have always been one of Japan’s biggest and most popular industries. We grew up hearing about the geishas and their tedious beauty routine. In college, we talked about Shiseido (資生堂) and Shu Uemura with our friends while gazing longingly at the glossy pages of Seventeen. And even to this day, despite all the K-beauty hype going on, Japanese brands (drugstore or not) have managed to hold its own with their innovative products. Japan is a treasure trove of cosmetic gems just waiting to be found, so when shopping for beauty products, it is imperative to have a clear idea of what you want – make a list if you […]

10 best Japanese beauty products

10 best Japanese beauty products

The Independent

The Japanese have their own approach when it comes to beauty. Acne treatments and anti-ageing creams that pervade Western skincare aisles take a back seat and products that care for the overall look and feel of skin are prioritised. Japanese cosmetics also tend to be made from more natural ingredients, making them the better choice for people with sensitive skin and those who dislike using blends containing too many chemicals.

Summer 2017 (hahahahahaa!) Reading List: Genre

by Ykkinna @ Life in a Cold Climate

Well, technically it IS still summer. But yeah, I admit, I’m rather late with this. It’s what happens when you order stuff from Book Depository and the parcels arrive one-by-one over two weeks and then you go on holiday before you manage to gather them all. No matter. I will not stop reading genre simply because summer will soon be over and these works are all on my list. As always, I make no promises: I’m sure I will in the end not read every single one – this is meant as inspiration, not a strict plan. I have, however, already finished a couple of things here, as I’m behind schedule with posting. In case aliens and elves aren’t your thing, I’ve also put together a non-fiction and a fiction list. 1. The Collapsing Empire by John Scalzi. I have only read one book (Redshirts) by Scalzi, one of the most popular SF writers of today. I liked it, but Redshirts is a bit of an oddity – a Star Trek parody -, so I’ve been planning to read a “proper Scalzi” for a while. The Collapsing Empire is his latest and should be a good fit for me, involving an interstellar empire, a horrible danger, a scientist, a starship captain and an empress. 2. A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas. I covered the first two installments in this wildly popular YA series in this post. Short summary: didn’t care much for the first, liked the second a lot. As I’m not a fan of the..

Cheap Face: The Makeup Edition

by Ykkinna @ Life in a Cold Climate

I know I’m not great at „beauty on the budget“ advice, as I usually use pretty pricey products myself and I’m not a professional blogger who tries and assesses everything on the market. This does not mean that I think expensive stuff is always better: there are fantastic products available for reasonable prices, but it takes time to find them. Time that I often don’t have. If I do find something that I believe competes with more expensive options, I’m very happy to share my finds, though. So when I found a couple of great drugstore products recently, I thought I’ll do a budget version of my three-minute face. Categories are (mostly) the same and everything here is quick to apply and easy to transport. 1. Cushion foundation. I have written about the L’Oreal Nude Magique/Lumi cushion before and I still think it’s a great option, but for a drugstore foundation, it’s in fact not that affordable. Maybelline’s Dream Cushion is cheaper (I think I paid a little over 10 euros) and just as good. I haven’t compared them side-by-side, but I think Maybelline is a little bit less dewy, has similar light-medium coverage, blends very easily and looks lovely on skin. It doesn’t last too well if you don’t set it, but touch-ups are very convenient, because CUSHION. Shade 21 is pretty perfect for me. 2. Stick concealer. I’m not a concealer person, but I have been using Maybelline Instant Anti-Age Eraser Eye concealer (in some countries, it’s called Age-Rewind concealer) recently and it’s impressively good. It comes in..
