Paraben-Free Skincare | Alpha Mom

Alpha Mom

Dear Amy, I've been using Philosophy products for ages now, AND I LOVE THEM. My skin is clear and balanced and great. But...I don't love parabens. In fact, they scare the crap out of me, and I've decided I want to cut them out of my skincare and cosmetics altogether. This seemed like an easy task until it came to my beloved Philosophy products. What's out there in the "natural" realm that works as well? I currently use the Purity wash, Hope in a Jar and Hope in a Bottle moisturizers (I break out around my period so I switch then) and When Hope is Not Enough eye cream. Oh, and I'm still occasionally using a Microdelivery Peel from like, two years ago. Because it still works. Probably thanks to the parabens. As you so often say, GAH. I want safe products, but I also don't ever want to go back to the skin I had as a teenager. What do you think about parabens? What can you suggest I try instead? (And yes, as soon as I send this question I'm off to write a plea to Philosophy to please

11 Practical and Fun Ways to Reduce Stress

by John Martins @ Well-Being Secrets

Stress isn’t as bad as you think it is. It can actually bring out the best in you – if you can look on the brighter side of things. You only need to ask yourself how a stressful problem can make you a better person. Having a positive perspective on things works wonders when managing stress. This might sound a little bit counter-intuitive. So, let me give you an example. Let’s say you are a sales person and has only a month to prove yourself worthy of the position. Not hitting targets will make you lose your job. It’s only

Accutane for Acne Treatment – Best Use Cases & Potential Side-Effects

by Dr. Sadia Samdani @ CAA

Accutane is the trade name for Isotretinoin (13-cis-retinoic acid). It belongs to the family of Retinoids.

Among several other purposes, it is primarily manufactured to treat acne. It is a derivative of vitamin A. For the same reason it is not advisable to take Vitamin A while taking Accutane, because it accumulates in tissues.

It is useful for treating almost all the different types of acne.

TLC singer Tionne ‘T-Boz’ Watkins Calls for Justice After Mentally Ill Cousin Is Shot At Least 18 Times By Police

TLC singer Tionne ‘T-Boz’ Watkins Calls for Justice After Mentally Ill Cousin Is Shot At Least 18 Times By Police

by Alexia Fernandez @ PEOPLE.com

TLC’s Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins is trying to come to grips with the shocking death of her cousin.

The singer, 47, shared a series of tweets this week, telling her followers her cousin, Eddie Russell Jr., 25, was shot to death by police officers 18 times.

In an Instagram post of her tweets shared on Sunday, the TLC singer wrote, “My Cousin Was Shot 18 Times Including the Face and Back of His Head! He Harmed NO ONE EVER! He Had Mental Health Issues AND THE COPS KNEW THAT! Anything he’s ever Done Was minor and NON VIOLENT! Eddie Russell Jr -A Human-Being -A Son- Brother-Friend-Nephew – Cousin-HUMAN!”

The Peoria Police Department in Illinois released a press release on their Facebook page on Friday, alleging Russell Jr. was shot and killed in front of his home as he was “advancing towards officers with a handgun.”

The incident took place on Wednesday at about 12:49 p.m. when officers responded to a bank robbery. Police say Russell Jr. headed toward a residential area, before being identified by police through a bank surveillance video.

When police located Russell Jr., they say they attempted to contact him for over two hours, before activating a special response team to the scene.

At about 3:46 p.m., Russell Jr. emerged from his home when officers shot him between 17 and 20 times, according to the department’s release.

Russell Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say the handgun he carried matched the same one that was used during the bank robbery.

The six officers involved in the shooting have been placed on critical incident leave, according to police.

On Twitter, Watkins defended her cousin, writing that police “used” his mother to get Russell Jr. to leave his home and when she called him out, they opened fire.

“I’ve watched this story change so many times right before my eyes!” she tweeted. “Jr. Was a sweet harmless young man with mental issues he couldn’t help.”

Shonda Rhimes Thinks Hollywood Is Making A ‘Giant Mistake’ By Failing to Embrace Diversity

Shonda Rhimes Thinks Hollywood Is Making A ‘Giant Mistake’ By Failing to Embrace Diversity

by Thatiana Diaz @ PEOPLE.com

It’s been a big year for Shonda Rhimes, the writer and executive producer behind hit shows like Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy and How to Get Away With Murder. It was announced last month that Rhimes would be leaving ABC to join the streaming giant Netflix, where she signed a multi-year deal as a producer for new series and other projects. Despite becoming a household name, she feels that Hollywood has a lot of work to do when it comes to inclusion.

Rhimes spoke to Latina.com about the lack of diversity onscreen. “It is a bit embarrassing to me that media and the industry hasn’t grown past itself,” she said. “Interestingly enough, what I find most shocking is that financially it’s just a giant mistake on the part of TV and movies and products to not portray, or reach out to a multitude of cultures, instead of just thinking of one kind of person and one kind of interest.”

She told that less diversity perpetuates stereotypes: “When you’re the only one of something, the tendency is that you have to represent everybody. So then you end being a stereotype or a totem, or perfect, it’s definitely frustrating.”

The prolific producer also fangirled over Latina actresses Salma Hayek and Sara Ramirez from Grey’s Anatomy. “Sara Ramirez had a lot of input and smart things to say and there was a lot of creation in that character; she really went for things,” she said. She also revealed that she was “heartbroken” when Ramirez decided to leave the show.

This isn’t the first time Rhimes has spoken out about Hollywood’s lack of diversity. While accepting the Norman Lear Achievement Award at the Producers Guild Awards last year, she urged her fellow storytellers to create more examples of strong black women in America. “What are we waiting for? I mean, I know this is a room full of producers, so probably you’re waiting for money. Clearly, money,” she bluntly said.

Girl Scout Cookie Baking Mixes to Hit Stores Nationwide

Girl Scout Cookie Baking Mixes to Hit Stores Nationwide

by mariayagoda @ PEOPLE.com

Samoas in cupcake form was a thing we never knew we needed, but now it’s the only thing we can think about.

Pillsbury just unveiled Girl Scout Cookie baking mixes, which are available in Thin Mints and Caramel & Coconut – a.k.a. Samoas – flavors. The four new mixes are for baking cupcakes, brownies and blondies — unfortunately, you won’t be able to make actual Girl Scout Cookies, because that would put a lot of 7-year-olds out of business.

“Families can try out their favorite cookie flavors in the form of brownies, cupcakes, and blondies, while they wait for the real thing once a year during Girl Scout Cookie season,” said Girl Scouts of the USA chief revenue officer Barry Horowitz in a statement.

GSC loyalists are, to put it mildly, freaking out.

The mixes, now available nationwide, retail for $3.29 each — almost $2 less than what you’d pay for a box of cookies.

Chip and Joanna Gaines Share Their Hilarious First Date Story

Chip and Joanna Gaines Share Their Hilarious First Date Story

by Megan Stein @ PEOPLE.com

Chip and Joanna Gaines are the definition of marriage goals, but their relationship didn’t necessarily have a fairytale start.

In the first chapter of The Magnolia Storyreleased as a sneak peek today, the Fixer Upper dream team spills the details of how they met — and it wasn’t exactly love at first sight.

Joanna agreed to go out on a date with Chip after meeting him and his roommate “Hot John” — who she actually tried to approach minutes earlier, but was too shy — in the waiting room of her dad’s auto shop. She had second thoughts, however, after Chip arrived an hour and a half late to pick her up.

“He didn’t apologize for being late, either. He had so much confidence. I don’t know. I can’t explain it. Only Chip could be an hour and a half late and have no one mad about it,” Joanna writes.

The chapter continues to describe the timeline of their relationship, which didn’t actually start until months after they first went out, when Chip (in typical guy fashion) finally called Joanna back.

“I’d made a bet with Hot John to see who could hold out the longest before calling our dates back,” Chip writes “I really wanted that fifty dollars from John! That’s the only reason I didn’t call.”

After they went out a second time, the rest was history.

The Truth About the Cancer Scare That Led to RHOC Star Peggy Sulahian's Double Mastectomy

The Truth About the Cancer Scare That Led to RHOC Star Peggy Sulahian's Double Mastectomy

by Dave Quinn @ PEOPLE.com

Cancer is a touchy topic on The Real Housewives of Orange County, what with Vicki Gunvalson‘s ex-boyfriend Brooks Ayers spending a whole season forging cancer documents and covering up his lies in order to make the Orange County Housewives believed he was in treatment.

So it’s no surprise that 100th Housewife Peggy Sulahian’s cancer scare was met with some skepticism on Monday’s all-new episode, especially when she explained that she got her double mastectomy after her doctors found abnormal cancerous cells — something she had failed to mention before.

“They found something,” the 44-year-old reality star told a table of ladies including Shannon Beador, Meghan King Edmonds, Tamra Judge and Kelly Dodd during a night out. “They did a biopsy and then they found out that it was abnormal cells. And then they said, ‘We found three millimeters of some cancer.’ I get a call from them saying, ‘Come back. We found something.’ ”

The comments were confusing considering the mother of three had previously told her RHOC costars doctors “didn’t find anything.”

“I’m very confused,” Beador said. “I honestly don’t remember Peggy saying she had cancer. And now I’m hearing that they did find cancer. So I’m a little in the dark.”

“I retired,” King Edmonds, who had uncovered Ayers’ scheme, joked. “I don’t want to open another can of worms like I did with Brooks. Peggy’s being confusing in communicating her health history. You have cancer or you don’t have cancer, it’s very black and white. No more cancergate, please!”

Lydia McLaughlin, Tamra Judge, Shannon Beador, Meghan King Edmonds, Vicki Gunvalson, Peggy Sulahian, and Kelly DoddBravo Media/Tommy Garcia

But Sulahian was happy to clear things up, recounting that even though she had BRCA gene testing — which helps women know their chance of getting breast and ovarian cancer — produced negative results, her doctors still found small cells.

“We did the MRI, we did the biopsy, call back saying that it’s abnormal cells,” she said, her doctor explaining “it was a pre-invasive cancer, it was small” in flashbacks.

“Abnormal cells means it can turn into cancer — it will turn if you don’t. They don’t want to take a chance. We’re taking care of it. With that being said, I went into the physician’s office, and she said, ‘Your came back negative but three millimeter, we found cancer.”

REAL HOUSEWIVES REWIND: Vick Apologies After Briana’s Cancer Scare

Sulahian also addressed the issue in her BravoTV blog back in August.

“I want to clear up my cancer facts,” she wrote. “Over a span of ten years, I scheduled mammograms and MRI’s every six months, my doctor found a mass in my right breast in the MRI. The immediate response to this news, was to schedule a biopsy. Despite being negative on the BRCA gene testing, the biopsy revealed pre cancerous cells within my right breast. Few weeks later, we scheduled a surgery to remove the 25 mm of mass, and sent the mass to the pathologist. In a matter of weeks, I was told that of the 25 mm removed, 3mm of it was already cancer.”

Sulahian, whose mother died of breast cancer when Sulahian was just 21 years old, then made the tough decision to take precautionary measures of undergoing a bilateral mastectomy to avoid any future scares.

“My options were limited to 3 choices: chemo, radiation, or removal of my right breast,” she added. “To be the safest, I took the measure of removing both breasts instead of limiting myself to just one. I wanted to be as safe as possible, knowing that breast cancer runs in my family. Testing negative for the BRCA gene doesn’t guarantee the chance of not getting cancer. It’s a blessing that I caught the cancer before being aggressive.”

RELATED VIDEO: Andy Cohen’s Pick For The Most Absurd Real Housewives Business Ever

As of now, Sulahian — who will document the process of getting reconstructive surgery on the show — is “100% cancer free.”

“Please stay on top of your appointments in order to dodge this terrible disease,” she wrote. “I want to emphasize that testing negative on the BRCA gene does NOT guarantee being free of cancer. Putting your life in the hands of a reconstructive surgeon isn’t easy. It’s a long healing process mentally and physically, but completely worth not living the rest of your life in fear. I’m currently considering becoming active in the cancer communities, in order to offer my advice, hear more stories, and provide emotional support for women encountering the road block in their life.”

The Real Housewives of Orange County airs Mondays (9 p.m. ET) on Bravo.

Nate Berkus Shares How His Entertaining Style Has Changed Since Welcoming Daughter Poppy

Nate Berkus is the expert on all things party planning. But since becoming a father to one-year-old daughter, Poppy, the designer’s go-to entertaining style has had a few changes.

“We entertain around her nap schedule now,” Berkus, artistic advisor for LG Studio, told PEOPLE at a breakfast on June 8, which celebrated the sleek line of high-end appliances he helped design.

But when Poppy isn’t snoozing, Berkus, 44, and husband Jeremiah Brent, 31, keep her busy with poolside play dates that are a far cry from a formal outdoor gathering.

“Our home is now filled with blow up toys from Target in the pool as opposed to margaritas,” Berkus said.

And the menu planning is even simpler.

“We throw food on the barbecue, we’ve actually even had a taco truck come once,” Berkus said. “We do put out snacks for the little ones, and they sit and throw them in the pool.”

LeeAnne Locken Threatens to Strangle Cary Deuber: ‘They’re Just Hands, But They Work Quite Well’

LeeAnne Locken Threatens to Strangle Cary Deuber: ‘They’re Just Hands, But They Work Quite Well’

by Dave Quinn @ PEOPLE.com

LeeAnne Locken promised fans and her Real Housewives of Dallas costars that she had turned over a new leaf this season, even going to therapy to get a hold of some of her anger management problems.

But on Monday’s episode, it looked like “the old LeeAnne” was back in full force when — frustrated over digs costar Cary Deuber had made about her plastic surgeon — Locken popped off and promised that Deuber’s words were going to get her “in big trouble.”

“Why is it so f—— important to Cary to come for me all the time?” Locken asked friend Brandi Redmond while waiting in the office of Dr. Robert True hours before having her breasts redone. “Because I’m gonna do something. She’s gonna come for me one day, and it isn’t gonna be pretty.”

“I didn’t grow up with a silver spoon in my mouth,” Locken continued. “I grew up with a lot of things in my hands, and they’re not knives, they’re just hands. But they work quite well.”

They were big threats to make to Deuber, who is a registered nurse and operative assistant to her plastic surgeon husband Mark. But Locken felt that Deuber had thrown the first punch by claiming Dr. True wasn’t board-certified as a plastic surgeon.

“He’s triple board-certified,” Locken said in defense of Dr. True. “He’s a board-certified OBGYN, a board-certified plastic surgeon and a board-certified hormone replacement specialist. He is a great guy even though Cary has issues with him. He handles all of my hormones. He does all of my botox.”

“I didn’t bring up surgery around her especially because I didn’t want her disrespecting my doctor. And what does she do? Disrespect my doctor,” Locked added to Redmond. “Do you remember when you had your ‘Mommy Makeover?’ How bad did she make you question the doctor? If it was just me it would be one thing but I remember you being so upset and freaked out and worried that you weren’t going to the right doctor. And did your surgery turn out okay? So what’s the f——- point? You can’t slam every doctor in town just because your husband is a doctor.”

Strangling wasn’t the only threat thrown Deuber’s way in Locken’s behind-closed-doors rant, though. The 50-year-old, newly engaged reality star also claimed Deuber’s husband Mark had been involved in sexual experiences with other men.

“Her husband gets his d— sucked at The Round-Up,” Locken said, naming a popular country-western gay bar and dance hall in Dallas. “I know the boys who did it.”

Her allegations about Mark were shocking, but it was the threat of strangling that left Redmond ultimately worried for her friend, Deuber.

“It’s not normal to sit there and threaten people’s lives,” she confessed to viewers before later claiming Locken “was spitting my face as she was saying it and her eyes were delusional.”

She then told Deuber about the threats, though she decided not to bring up the defamatory comments made about Mark.

“It’s none of my business, it’s nobody’s business,” Redmond explained. “It’s only going to hurt Cary if I start spreading it around. But threatening somebody’s life? It should be on our radar.”

Deuber, for her part, was at her wits end.

“I’m so sick of this. Seriously? Last year it’s how I got my husband, this year she’s going to strangle me?” Deuber lamented. “You don’t threaten people. … I felt like we were in a good place, and then she flipped out on me. What do you even say to someone who has called you all these crazy names?”

Mark was equally frustrated.

“Again with the threats? What the hell is wrong with this crazy woman?” he asked his wife. “I’d like you to avoid her. She has no conscience whatsoever.”

Still, Deuber vowed to remain calm.

“I definitely am sacred but I’m not going to give her the power of acting scared. The more you feed the dragon, the bigger it gets,” Deuber said. “And she has nothing to lose.”

RELATED VIDEO: Which Real Housewives Star Warned Dallas Housewives About Doing the Show?

In true Housewives fashion, Deuber and Locken found themselves together days later on a trip to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. And while they avoided one another, Locken did admit to regretting her words.

“I’ve gone out of my way to be nice to her. But honestly, she starts those snide little comments. I have a guttural reaction to her,” Locken said. “The truth is, I’m my own worst enemy. I create my own downfalls.”

Despite not hearing Locken’s allegations about her husband, Deuber has already clapped back at anyone who makes any comments about his sexual orientation.

“Let’s shut that down right now. It’s not cool. … Change your viewpoint,” she wrote on her BravoTV blog in August when Mark was nominated for a Dallas Culture Map Style Mker. “Listen, it is immeasurably ignorant to say someone is ‘gay’ because they like style or art. We all have plenty of friends WHO HAVE great fashion sense and plenty who don’t. It has nothing to do with sexual preference and is very offensive and small-minded to think that way (let alone spew it directly at people like it even matters). I am so proud of my stylishly savvy husband in everything that he does. … At the end of the day, the most important thing here is love.”

The Real Housewives of Dallas airs Mondays (10 p.m. ET) on Bravo.

Others swear by coconut oil or argan oil, a celebrity brand with unintelligible ingredients or just simple soap. Most women in general, but particularly over 60 are concerned about the onset of an ‘aging’ appearance, and want to have “younger-looking” skin to match the eternal youth brand machine they are exposed to every day. But wouldn’t it be great if instead of talking about “younger looking skin,” we could focus on having “healthy skin” at any age? DWTS Gets Serious the First Contest Eliminated From Season 25

DWTS Gets Serious the First Contest Eliminated From Season 25

by Dana Rose Falcone @ PEOPLE.com

WARNING — Spoilers ahead

After tanking with the lowest scores of the evening, there was no saving this Shark.

Barbara Corcoran will just have to go back to her day job as an investor on Shark Tank as she was the first to be eliminated from season 25 of Dancing With the Stars.

On the Sept. 18 season premiere, the businesswoman, 68, along with her 27-year-old partner Keo Motsepe,  failed to win over the judges with a salsa to Ludacris’ “Money Maker.” They earned a 14 out of 30, putting them in last place for week 1.

The real estate mogul then got into her grove a little more when she and Motsepe foxtrotted to “Whatever Lola Wants”. While, the judges complimented Corcoran’s ability to relax during her second number and gave them a better score of 17 out of 30 – it was not enough to advance them in the competition.

Team Sharkeo learned Monday that they’d be the first season 25 duo to go home, landing in the bottom alongside former NFL player Terrell Owens and dancer Cheryl Burke, who performed a steamy foxtrot to Zayn Malik‘s “Pillowtalk.”

“How am I going to live without him?” Corcoran said of Motsepe after getting eliminated. “It was such an honor and probably the most exciting thing I’ve ever done in my whole life.”

She reiterated that sentiment while talking to reporters after the show, jokingly adding, “I should stick to real estate!”

RELATED VIDEO: DWTS Season 25: Barbara Meets Keo

Their elimination came after the Shark revealed her battle with dyslexia and its impact on her life.

“I’m back at the bottom of class in second grade being the dunce,” Corcoran said after receiving her first low score. “I’ve been dyslexic my whole life. It definitely affects you. There’s always the stupid kid that made fun of . I don’t want anybody to laugh.”

“The truth is it’s actually a good place for me to come from,” Corcoran confessed to Motsepe during rehearsal. “Everything good came because I knew how to bounce back up. Everything I’ve ever done in life has been to prove that I’m not stupid.”

Dancing With the Stars airs Mondays on ABC at 8 p.m. ET.
