The Pro Files: Meet Beyoncé's Makeup Artist Sir John

The Pro Files: Meet Beyoncé's Makeup Artist Sir John

by Jackie Fields @ PEOPLE.com

Imagine being thisclose to Beyoncé’s face and not hyperventilating. Not only has makeup artist Sir John mastered the art of staying serene when in the presence of the Queen, he’s created absolutely ***Flawless looks for her for the past seven years. As if collaborating with Bey for red carpet appearances, tours, and two visual albums hasn’t kept his schedule busy enough, Sir John has also managed to amass an impressive celebrity clientele (from Priyanka Chopra and Karlie Kloss to Joan Smalls and Serena Williams), partnered with L’Oréal Paris, and most recently added another major job to his resmué – mentor on Lifetime’s new beauty competition series American Beauty Star. To celebrate the show’s premiere, we caught up with him to discuss everything from his biggest influences to Instagram filters, and of course, life on the run with Mrs. Carter.

Take us back to the moment you knew you wanted to be a professional makeup artist?

“I had been doing makeup at counters for years, but when I met Pat and I saw the range of where it could go, that’s when I started to take it seriously.”

How was the industry different then?

“Then, there was no Instagram! So how I got popular was girls would get photographed in the looks I had created after fashion shows.”

Now over 175,000 people follow you on Instagram! Sidenote: If you could only use one Instagram filter, what would it be?

“Juno because it gives you a bit of brightness in the center of your face so its like faux contour.”

Who was your first celebrity client?

“Naomi Campbell. I met her during my first Paris Fashion Week, and next thing I knew, I was getting called to go do her makeup at her hotel! I remember all of it being so new to me. I was like, ‘Okay, there’s no train back. This is business.'”

Of all the makeup looks you’ve created, what are some of your personal favorites?

“I loved when Joan did a big, denim smoky eye for the 2015 CFDA Awards, and when she did a purple lip a few years ago for the 2014 Met Gala. Those were so fun. She’s like a makeup artist in her head, so she’ll send me Pinterest images or like YouTube clips or Instagram images.”

You assisted makeup guru Charlotte Tilbury. What’s the best beauty tip she ever taught you?

“More than makeup, she taught me how to sort of tap into a woman’s psychology and understand how she wants to feel — that it’s not so much where she’s going, or what she’s wearing, or what her hair looks like, but what her aura is when she comes in the room. Is it heavy? Is she in a good place?  It’s all about what you don’t have to say to your client. Now, I can read the girls who are my clients when they come in immediately. I can tell if it’s gonna be a lip day, if it’s gonna be a statement eye day, if its just gonna be a liner and individual lashes and leave her alone day. That non-verbal communication you have with your clients is what keeps you in the business a long time.”

What was the moment that you became a household name?

“I don’t think I am a household name — yet — but I think everyone started to know me when Beyoncé’s first visual album came out. We were touring while we shot it and we would have five a.m. call times, wrap at 5 p.m., and then drive directly to the stadium in South America or Australia or New Zealand or wherever we were. When it came out, everyone had a new appreciation for what I do. But I still feel like I have such a long way to go.”

What was your very first encounter with Queen Bey herself like?

“I met her at Tom Ford’s first womenswear show in 2010. Charlotte introduced me to her, and was like, ‘I’m not gonna do her makeup, you’re gonna do her makeup.’  And I kind of freaked out! When I saw her for the first time, I thought, ‘you’re a real person. Oh my God, this is crazy.’ We’re the same age and I think we hit it off that day — but I always kept a really strong separation from my clients —  I think that distance gives you longevity. I don’t think, ‘this is my friend.’ Even if I have been at parties that she invited me to, if I happen to have one glass of wine too many, I am slipping out the side door. I don’t want my client to see my tipsy. It’s about a level of respect.”

And here we are!

“Here we are, seven years later. I think that she has been a huge blessing in my life. And I love her son’s name!”

Speaking of Bey’s beautiful brood, you’ve also “worked” with Blue Ivy for the MTV Video Music Awards!

“I gave her a little lip balm. I have a kit for her, so I’ve become like the candy man!”

What’s your most requested Bey beauty look?

The 2017 Grammys. Everyone sort of still references that. It got the most eyes for some reason. For me this year, I think that was one of the most impactful things that I did, work-wise.

How do you approach her tour makeup?

“I looked at every show as my own personal editorial. I had a Pinterest folder full of looks for different cities we would go to. Like when we were in South America I was going to do this whole Bianca Jagger moment, and then when we went to another country I just wanted to make her look like Diana Ross. And she would be like, ‘do what you want.’ And in those times that’s where we bonded on tour. Because you see so much stuff happening. We were on tour and seeing so many things on the news, like killing, after killing, after killing of black guys by the cops. You come into work heavy. So during hair and makeup became the time that we would talk about what hurts us about society and the world we live in. And the next thing we know, she came out with “Formation“, which was so much like what was going on around us at the time.”

Now, you’re transitioning from behind the scenes to in front of the camera in Lifetime’s American Beauty Star. What can we expect from the show?

“Well, one thing I love about the show is Adriana Lima. She’s really fun and has a great laugh. We’re actually completely opposite: I’m a little bit more calm and reserved and she is high energy. But also, I love the fact that this show is not just about who does amazing hair or makeup, it’s about the person’s personality and whether it shines through. To anyone who wants to be a hairstylist or makeup artist: You’re not in the business for hair or makeup, your in the business of people. You’re the last person your client sees before he or she walks on the runway or sings in front of millions of people, so your energy should be infectious. It should be something that can create vibrations. So that was something we were looking for in the contestants as well.”

Did you learn anything about yourself while filming?

“I saw a lot of my younger self in the contestants in that moment of wanting to just be great. So I’m learning that, wow, they wanna be here, but I’m not happy just being here right now. I have so much more I want to do. I’m looking at Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty release, and all these other things, and being inspired. When you think you’re at the mountain top, you gotta keep going. You can’t stay there. But also, I need to stop sometimes and smell the roses because I’m always looking at next, next, what’s happening next, what’s happening tomorrow. In this industry, if you haven’t done a cover in the last month, people are looking at you like you’re slipping. So, just having a sense of calm and not thinking that I need to run, run, run on the treadmill like a gerbil, too.”

What do you count as some of your proudest moments of your career so far?

“One of the best things that has ever happened was getting a contract with L’Oréal Paris. That changed my life, I would say. Also meeting Beyoncé and getting that call back from her. And the show is so cool. I’m on a TV show! And then, just being able to give back to my mom. She sacrificed so much for all of us just to live our dreams, and I’ll always be forever in debt to her because she was my OG. She was my Beyoncé before I had Beyoncé. My mother was the most beautiful woman in the world.”

What is your message to other artists out there?

“I think the new generation of artists in the world we live in now, we don’t have the luxury of just doing beautiful makeup or doing beautiful hair. There is such a social and emotional connection that we have to have with our work that you have to be deeper than people ever previously were. You have to have that substance.”

Skincare for Psoriasis

by Nathan Rivas @ The Cosmetics Cop

Treating psoriasis is tricky enough on its own, so how do you put together a skincare routine that won’t make it worse and that will help manage it? Are there skincare products that can help reduce psoriasis? We answer those questions and more in this must-read article for anyone struggling with this skin disorder. In This Article: Consider Topical Retinoids and Salicylic Acid (BHA) Putting Together a Skincare Routine for Psoriasis It is certainly no surprise to anyone with psoriasis that over-the-counter or "traditional" skincare products are not capable of completely clearing an outbreak—simply put, prescription treatments are the most effective. Still, the right skincare products can make a difference, and your skincare routine can play an important role in making sure your psoriasis doesn’t get worse. A great routine also will allow the treatments that do minimize outbreaks to work their best. In this article we detail some topical products that can help, and explain how to build a gentle skincare routine to soothe psoriasis-affected skin. Consider Topical Retinoids and Salicylic Acid (BHA) Topical retinoids (that is, various forms of vitamin A; the over-the-counter ingredient to look for is retinol) are helpful in managing psoriasis because of their ability […]

Are Tanning Beds Safe?

by Nathan Rivas @ The Cosmetics Cop

If you’re using or thinking of using a tanning bed, we strongly urge you to reconsider. You may not see the damage now, but you will eventually—and it isn’t pretty! In This Article: Love Being Tan? Think Again & Save Your Skin! Friends Don’t Let Friends Use Tanning Beds Tanning Bed Facts & Controversies   You may not see the damage now, but you will eventually—and it isn’t pretty! Tanning can lead to a host of problems, including brown spots, wrinkles, sagging skin, and most dangerous – skin cancer. Here, we lay out the risks and some of the startling statistics that we hope will make you think twice before hitting a tanning bed.   Love Being Tan? Think Again and Save Your Skin! Without question, there is no such thing as a safe tan from the sun or tanning beds. ALL tanning other than from a self-tanner is a problem. Whether you tan a little or a lot, skin turning any shade that is darker than your natural skin color is hazardous to your health and for all intents and purposes is virtually identical to the carcinogenic effect of smoking a cigarette. Over time, the damage is certain and […]

Honest Bug Spray: An Honest Review

by Erika Jones @ Organic Baby Resource

Independence Day is coming up in the states and you probably have plenty of outdoor activities planned for the weekend. I’ve tried my share of natural insect repellants and Honest Bug Spray is what I have on hand now. Here are the Pros and Cons. Pros DEET Free. While the Environmental Working Group considers DEET, an effective chemical bug repellant, safe for children, they do still express concerns about potential side effects to the nervous system in rare cases. Recognizable Ingredient list: soybean oil, castor oil, citronella oil, cedarwood oil, lemongrass oil, rosemary oil, geranium oil, peppermint oil, water and wintergreen oil. I love that it has a minty smell. Easily accessible as I grabbed it at Costco Certified Organic, which means its ingredients were derived without the use of pesticides or chemical processes. Cons I found its effectiveness hit or miss. I wish it were more consistently protecting the family from bites. Unfortunately, my mother-in-law noticed me getting an unfair of bites when she was over one evening and she jokingly called it “Come Get Me, Mosquitos.” This has not been my experience consistently, however. When I’m proactive and put it on before going out, I find I get less […]

Ricky Martin Says He Still Hasn’t Heard From His Brother in Puerto Rico

by Thatiana Diaz @ PEOPLE.com

Ricky Martin continues is raise his voice in support of his home island of Puerto Rico, which was violently struck by Hurricane Maria on Wednesday, leaving at least ten dead and the U.S. territory without electricity, running water and dwindling food supplies.

The singer shared a message of concern and frustration on Instagram, revealing that he’d not received any news from one of his brothers, who resides in Puerto Rico.

“I am very worried because I haven’t been able to get in touch with my brother. We don’t know where he is. I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s dealing with this uncertainty,” he said in the video.

“I’m sure there are many people living outside of or on the island who have not been able to talk to their families due to communication issues,” he added.

Speaking to his 8.9 million followers, Martin urged fans to send money to his fundraising campaign, which he launched a few days ago to rebuild his home island and help the victims of Maria’s destruction. Fundraising goals were exceeded, but the “Vente Pa’Ca'” singer said that it doesn’t end there. “We reached our goal and now we have to aim for more because there is a lot left to do,” he said, imploring his audience: “Please donate. One dollar that you give is one dollar that will get to the victims.”

Jennifer Lopez—born to Puerto Rican parents— also revealed last Thursday that she still hadn’t heard from her family in Puerto Rico, two days after Hurricane Maria hit. “What’s on my mind is what’s going on in Puerto Rico. The devastation is beyond belief,” J Lo said in an Instagram post.”Me and my cousin still haven’t been able to hear from our families over there.”

On Sunday, Lopez joined New York Governor Andrew Cuomo for a press conference to galvanize the public to aid the devastated Caribbean island. She pledged to donate $1 million from proceeds of her Las Vegas shows.

Weight Gain During Pregnancy: Finding the Balance

Watching the numbers go up on the scale during pregnancy can be hard to bear for some moms-to-be, especially if they seem to fly by faster than you thought possible. Aw, Nuts! Fuller House Creator Has Officially 'Given Up' on Olsen Twins Appearance

by Aurelie Corinthios @ PEOPLE.com

In the words of Michelle Tanner herself, aw nuts!

With another season of the Netflix-revived Fuller House currently streaming, the much-discussed absence of the Olsen twins is once again on fans’ minds. Unfortunately, series creator Jeff Franklin says it’s pretty unlikely that either Mary-Kate or Ashley will ever reprise their shared role on the beloved sitcom.

“Personally, I’ve given up asking them,” Franklin told TVLine. “The door is open, but I’m not going to be calling them anymore to invite them. They just don’t seem interested in coming.”

“It’s been three years of invitations, so they know the door is open,” he added. “It’s up to them to decide if they want to come play or not.”

Seasons 1 and 2 of the reboot alluded to Michelle’s absence, making several shoutouts to the twins who took turns playing the youngest of Danny Tanner’s daughters. But according to the outlet, there are no such mentions in the most recent season 3, the first half of which dropped Friday.

Mary-Kate and Ashley, 31, are the only series regulars from the original Full House (which ran from 1987-95) who have not returned to visit the Tanner home.

FROM PEN: TV Revivals We Want to See

The reboot is now on its third season — and if the cast has any say, it won’t be ending anytime soon.

“One day it will just be Fullest House,” Bob Saget recently joked to PEOPLE Now. “It will just be me in an urn by the window.”

Part one of Fuller House season 3 is now streaming on Netflix.

Should You Get A Facial?

by Nathan Rivas @ The Cosmetics Cop

Are facials necessary, and if so, what exactly do they do? We provide all the details, including critical pros and cons you need to know before you make an appointment! In This Article: Hype & Hope Benefits of a Facial What are Hydrafacials? What a Facial Cannot Do Good vs. Bad Aestheticians What About Devices Used During a Facial? After the Facial, Get Ready for Sales Pressure! The Facial Decision Women routinely ask us if getting a facial is worth their time and money. Facials are a confusing issue, primarily because of the endless misinformation about exactly what they can do for your skin. In fact, more often than not, women who have gotten facials give us mixed feedback: Some tell us they love how their skin looks, others see no change in their skin, and still others report that they’ve ended up with more problems than they had before they got a facial. Hype & Hope Aside from the hype and nonsense you read in fashion magazines and the pictures you see of women serenely wrapped in a towel with a mask on their face and cucumber slices over their eyes (cucumbers do nothing for the eye area), the […]

Is Mineral Oil Bad for Skin?

by Nathan Rivas @ The Cosmetics Cop

Is mineral oil the “Boo Radley” of the cosmetics industry? Find out why the spooky tales about cosmetic mineral oil aren’t true (and what makes it such a fab skin-care ingredient)! In This Article: What Is Mineral Oil? Environmental Concerns Is Mineral Oil Contaminated? Can Mineral Oil Clog Pores? The Bottom Line Sometimes things that are good can get a bad reputation that’s undeserved (not to mention hard to shake). Such is the case with mineral oil, a harmless and beneficial ingredient that’s used in many skincare products, but has been linked online and in magazines to all kinds of terrible things. It’s time to set the record straight on mineral oil, and why the negative rumors you’ve read or heard are simply untrue. What Is Mineral Oil? Mineral oil is clear, odorless oil derived from petroleum that is widely used in cosmetics because it rarely causes allergic reactions and it can’t become solid and clog pores. Studies have found mineral oil and petrolatum (a semi-solid form of mineral oil more commonly known as Vaseline) can assist in wound healing, and are among the most effective moisturizing ingredients available. Though its association with petroleum has caused people to say mineral […]

Baby Biting Tips

by Kevin @ Baby Development and Breastfeeding Resources

Mothers sometimes worry about breastfeeding when their baby has teeth. Most babies do not bite, but a few do. There are things moms can do to stop baby from biting.

It helps to know a little about how breastfeeding works. In order to suck, a baby needs to keep his tongue over his lower gum. This places the tongue between the teeth and the breast. Having the tongue over the gum stops the bite reflex. If the baby is latched properly, the nipple is deep in the mouth and protected from baby’s teeth. However, sometimes a baby may release the normal, deep latch and clamp down on the mother’s breast.
•    Some babies bite to reduce the flow of milk if it is too fast for them. Try leaning back while feeding. Putting the baby in more upright feeding position helps manage a fast milk flow. Avoid pressing on the baby’s head. This allows him to let go of the breast if he needs to take a breath.

White Noise: A Natural Sleep Solution?

by Erika Jones @ Organic Baby Resource

Does white noise provide a natural sleep solution? If you are an exhausted mama who likes to drift away to the sound of rain, the ocean or even wind blowing the answer is Yes. If you have a toddler who is part sweetie pie and part vampire well not so much. Stay tuned for more details about our experience after this commercial break… I came to know this because I confessed, while at a Bible study recently, that my three year old is still waking me up at night. She sometimes cowboy kicks my door open to let me know she is awake in the middle of the night. I asked for prayer and was also blessed with a few right now suggestions. White noise was one of the many solutions mamas had successfully tried. I tried to buy the machine during the meeting. Before I could finish adding it to my cart, one of the mamas said I should try out this White Noise phone app before going to spend my money. Yes! I felt some ZZZs were in my immediate future and I downloaded it as soon as I got home that night. Pleasantly surprised by all the options […]

Natural Mama Life: Keisha Rivers

I’m excited to share the first guest feature in a series I’m calling Natural Mama Life, designed to give you a glimpse of how parenting and healthy living intersect in other mamas’ homes. So without further adieu, meet Keisha, a mom of two. Her daughter is 12 and her son is 9. Keisha balances her family life in Texas, with a career as a Marketing Director.   What does natural living mean in your home?   Natural living in our household means primarily eating whole foods instead of processed foods, being mindful of the ingredients in the foods and products we consume.  We also practice natural living in our beauty and hair-care regimen, using simple products, such as coconut oil, for our hair and skin care.     In terms of natural living, where do you “relax” your approach so that you can prioritize what matters most, and how did you find peace with that? My husband and kids use an all-natural deodorant but I have yet to find one that seems to work for me. I’ve tried a number of natural deodorants and too many of them have let me down.  So I use a regular deodorant.  I may eventually […]

41 Paleo and Vegan Pumpkin Recipes To Die For

by Chere @ Eluxe Magazine

By Lora O’Brien I have to say, I think autumn may be my favourite season. The air is crisp and fresh, our clothes become comfortably oversized and cosy and PSLs become a daily ritual. What’s not to love about fall? The natural world around us explodes with fiery colour, and the harvests come to our tables. And of course, there’s one crop that we tend to favour the most: pumpkin! Not only is pumpkin packed full of fibre, vitamins and antioxidants that will take good care of our bodies over the impending harsher months, but pumpkins are pretty versatile, and can be throw into anything from chia puddings and ice creams to warming soups to hearty pasta dishes. You may be tempted to buy tinned pumpkin puree, but believe me, the taste of a fresh roasted pumpkin isn’t only much better, it’s also way better for you, since cans are still coated with harmful BPA plastic. If you’re really in a rush or are feeling lazy, why not try frozen pumpkin? I personally roast a bunch of pumpkin all at once then freeze what I’m not using immediately for later use. And speaking of use, I’ve found over 30 of […]

Parabens: Are They Really a Problem?

by Nathan Rivas @ The Cosmetics Cop

Whether it is a cleanser, lotion, toner, blush, foundation, or mascara, without preservatives like parabens these everyday items would become overloaded with bacteria, mold, and fungus, making them harmful to skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Good to know: parabens aren’t the enemy! In This Article: Should You Avoid Parabens? Parabens vs. Other Natural Ingredients International Safety Assessments of Parabens Bottom Line Whether it is a cleanser, lotion, toner, blush, foundation, or mascara, without preservatives these everyday items would become overloaded with bacteria, mold, and fungus, making them harmful to skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. However, as necessary as preservatives are to the safety of cosmetics, they’ve had their share of woes over the years. Today, parabens are generating buzz for allegedly being bad ingredients. But do parabens deserve their bad, media-fueled reputation? Let’s get to the surprising facts! Should You Avoid Parabens? In a word, no. Despite the media frenzy surrounding parabens, the published research and global cosmetic regulatory organizations are making that answer clear: parabens, especially in the small amounts used in personal-care products, do not pose a significant health risk. There is no legitimate reason for consumers to avoid cosmetic products that contain parabens. According to these studies, […]

Happy Mother’s Day Plus Sunscreen Tips to get the Month Underway!

by Erika Jones @ Organic Baby Resource

May is here and I have LOTS of goodies in store for you this month. To start I want to wish you an early HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! Whether you are celebrating your mom or being showered by your own growing family. Enjoy the day, be thankful for your loved ones and take some time to reflect on the goodness that is motherhood. I mentioned this book before, Q & A a day for Moms, before, but I really like it as a Mother’s Day present – even if you buy it yourself. The book is a 5 year journal that prompts you to write a sentence a day to capture your feelings about motherhood or something your child did that day. Truth be told I’ll be playing a little catch up in my book on Sunday so that I can capture some of the precious moments that are unfolding in my life right now via my kiddos. Other than May being the month of Mother’s Day and my birthday, It’s always been my favorite month because it’s when the sun comes out more consistently without too much heat. That said I wanted to share some sunscreen tips to help you with […]

Meet Gabrielle!

by Erika Jones @ Organic Baby Resource

A few posts back I shared that I’m writing a book about the Ten Building Blocks of Organic Baby Care. Well in addition to lots of helpful real life tips, I’ve created a fictional storyline and some fun characters I’m sure you will relate to in one way or another. So meet Gabrielle. She is the first of four ladies who become sister-friends in the book. She is a yoga instructor, loves to travel and is expecting not one but two babies. She’s eager to make all the healthiest choices she can for her baby. She’s been doing it herself, but she’s ready to step it up a notch. Stay tuned to meet the other characters. I can’t wait to hear which one you relate to the most. Oh and if you are interested in the process behind creating Gabrielle, I share more on erikalynnejones.com. Until Next Time,

BabyGanics Sunscreen

by Erika Jones @ Organic Baby Resource

We are currently using babyganics sunscreen to protect us from sunburn outdoors. We are two-thirds through the tube so I thought it was time to share my thoughts…   Pros The sunscreen protects against both UVA_UVB rays It’s water resistant for up to 80 minutes It comes out of the tube easily and is easy to apply to the skin The sunscreen receives a 2 rating from the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) Cosmetics Guide. A rating of 1-2 is considered a low hazard product. babyganics is easily accessible at local big box stores and on Amazon. The sunscreen does not contain nano-particles, parabens, fragrances, phthalates, or PABA (Para-AminoBenzoic Acid). Cons As with most zinc oxide based sunscreens, it does leave a white film on the skin. In my opinion its probably the brightest film I’ve seen. As the instructions say, you have to apply it pretty often. The EWG rating seems to take an average of all of the ingredients to come up with an overall rating. Two ingredients, octisalate and phenoxyethanol receive a rating of 4 which is considered of moderate hazard. Should You Buy It babyganics is safer than most options you’ll find at your big box store or at a pool […]

Four Things You Need to Potty Train With Ease

by Erika Jones @ Organic Baby Resource

Whoa, June has flown by. We just took a mini road trip to visit friends in Houston and we had a great time participating in my friend’s summer reading program, HYPE. My older girls participated while I volunteered and observed their awesome curriculum in practice. Prior to motherhood I was an Executive Director for an after school literacy and fitness program. So I’m all about programs that expose kids to quality books while fostering a love for reading and their community at large. If you happen to live in Houston check out their site to see how you can get involved. By the way, I’m actually working on my first children’s book this summer with my daughters. The topic is under wraps for a bit, but I will be sharing some of my practice character illustrations on Instagram this month if you’re interested. So another project of mine involves potty training my two year old. She is doing a great job at keeping herself dry when asked in a timely fashion, but when I forget to ask it’s a different story. So I guess I’m the one holding this potty train party up. I’m hoping we can make more progress […]

Tom Brady Doesn’t Do ‘Cheat Days’: ‘I Believe in the Ideas of Balance and Moderation’

Tom Brady Doesn’t Do ‘Cheat Days’: ‘I Believe in the Ideas of Balance and Moderation’

by Julie Mazziotta @ PEOPLE.com

Tom Brady‘s famous diet is low in meat, high in fiber and free of sugar, strawberries, coffee and more. But he does have the occasional cheeseburger or treat — he just doesn’t call it a “cheat day.”

“I don’t plan ‘cheat days’ … I actually don’t believe in the idea,” the New England Patriots quarterback tells PEOPLE. “The way I eat makes me feel great. But I believe in the ideas of balance and moderation, and if I’m in a place with incredible food, I’ll absolutely try it.”

As Brady explains in his new book, The TB12 Method, he’ll switch up his diet on special occasions — like a trip to Italy with wife Gisele Bündchen.

“Last year, my wife and I went to Italy, a country that presents a lot of temptation,” he writes. “… In Italy I definitely ate some things that were not TB12-compliant! My brain and body needed that downtime.”

“I won’t always turn down a cheeseburger or an ice cream cone,” he adds. “I just won’t have one every night and I won’t have ten of them, either.”

RELATED VIDEO: Tom Brady: I Let My Daughter Get Away with “Everything”

In his book, Brady also details the “core concepts of muscle pliability” to which he credits his continued success in the punishing NFL at age 40.

“The improvement I’ve seen in my training is less about any particular movement and more about changing the focus of my training to incorporate pliability,” he tells PEOPLE. “Before and after every workout, my body coach Alex performs deep-force muscle work to make sure my muscles are long, soft and primed for activity.”

Designed in collaboration with Guerrero, the mobility program makes up the bulk of the book, and is also the focus of the TB12 Training Center in Foxboro, Mass. The techniques range from strength-building movements using resistance bands to stretches with vibrating foam rollers and massage balls.

The muscle pliability program hasn’t been scientifically proven to work — a New York Times review of The TB12 Method found no studies or clinical trials on the concept, and Stuart Phillips, a professor at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, and an expert in muscle physiology, told the Times “It’s balderdash.”

But Brady touts the program as the key to his success, and his continued prowess on the field shows that he is clearly doing something right. With the book, he and Guerrero hope to supply “everyone, everywhere” with the muscle pliability program.

“I’d gotten to a place early in my career where I thought physical pain and strain was part of the job. Through working with Alex we’ve improved my muscle pliability, which protects my body, and our resistance band exercises have helped me develop the optimal functional strength I need to succeed on the field,” Brady tells PEOPLE. “I’m definitely a stronger and faster quarterback now compared to my 20s.”

Dog Abandoned in Las Vegas Airport with Desperate Note, Finds New Home After Having 'No Other Option'

Dog Abandoned in Las Vegas Airport with Desperate Note, Finds New Home After Having 'No Other Option'

by Kelli Bender @ PEOPLE.com

Chewy has gone from having “no other option” to embracing a brand new start.

In July, the tiny Chihuahua was abandoned in a bathroom at Las Vegas’ McCarren International Airport with a note that read:

“Hi! I’m Chewy! My owner was in an abusive relationship and couldn’t afford me to get on the flight. She didn’t want to leave me with all her heart, but she has no other option. My ex-boyfriend kicked my dog when we were fighting and he has a big knot on his head. He probably needs a vet. I love Chewy sooo much – please love and take care of him.”

Chewy’s heartbreaking background of domestic abuse pulled at the heartstrings of animal lovers the world over, including the staff at Connor & Millie’s Dog Rescue, who took in the little pup.

While the note left with Chewy suggested the dog might be hurt, the rescue was relieved to find that the dog had no permanent injuries.

The rescue waited for the original owner to come forward to claim the dog, but never heard from them. Luckily, there were thousands of people interested in being Chewy’s new pet parents. Before picking out his adopter, Connor and Millie’s Dog Rescue placed the pup with foster mom Patricia Montano, so he had a chance to heal, rest and get used to a peaceful life.

“He had a pretty good bump on the side of his head. He also had some really bad pain in his jaw. He yawned and there was just this gut-wrenching scream,” Montano told News3LV about Chewy’s condition when he first came to live with her.

After a few months with Montano, Chewy is ready for a forever home, and Connor and Millie’s Dog Rescue has found the perfect one. The 2-lb. dog will soon be going home with a local Las Vegas family, who the rescue has chosen not to identify.

Chewy’s journey to a new home is almost over, but Montano is sure his story will endure.

“I think he really set the stage for people to talk about domestic violence,” she said.

The foster mom believes Chewy’s story has raised awareness about the resources available to domestic abuse victims with pets, like Noah’s Animal House — a local animal boarding facility that cares for the pets of abuse victims until they are able to look after them again.

She also hopes Chewy’s original owner sees the update on their former pup and knows that the little Chihuahua is doing big things.

Amal Clooney Praises United Nations for Putting ISIS Terrorists ‘On Trial’ Via New International Investigation

Amal Clooney Praises United Nations for Putting ISIS Terrorists ‘On Trial’ Via New International Investigation

by Madison Rossi @ PEOPLE.com

Amal Clooney penned an article for HuffPost to bring attention to the United Nations security council unanimously approving a resolution to help Iraq build war crimes cases against Islamic terrorist groups. George Clooney’s other half has been urging the U.N. to pass this resolution for more than a year.

“The resolution is a rare show of unity for the council and provides a global response to ISIS that extends beyond the battlefield to include a commitment to punishing individuals through the courts,” Clooney wrote in the piece, published Friday.

“It is a major victory for ISIS victims, who have bravely campaigned for justice and waited too long for a chance to see their tormentors in the dock.”

In spring of 2016, the 39-year-old human rights lawyer began working as counsel to Yazidis survivors, an Iraqi ethnic and religious minority group who have been victims of genocide by Islamic State fighters since 2014.

One of the survivors represented by Clooney is Nadia Murad, who was enslaved and raped by ISIS militants in Iraq at the age of 21. Murad has since become the U.N.’s ambassador on human trafficking.

“Nadia cannot understand why, even though the genocide began over three years ago, no ISIS member has been put on trial for it,” Clooney wrote. “Instead, evidence has been disappearing every day: witnesses have fled, medical evidence has been lost and documents have been destroyed. Mass graves, including the one where Nadia believes her mother is buried, have been exposed to contamination. Unless evidence is properly collected now, justice will forever remain out of reach. This is why the Security Council’s intervention is so critical: not just for the Yazidis but for all victims of ISIS’s brutality.”

Clooney also began acting as legal counsel for nonprofit Yazda, which supports the same cause. All her efforts aim to secure accountability for international crimes against members of the Yazidi community, who reside in Iraq and Syria. These brutal crimes include “genocide, mass executions, sexual enslavement and trafficking, recruitment of child soldiers and forced displacement,” according to Yazda.

Clooney previously addressed the U.N. on International Women’s Day this year, calling members of the U.N. to action.

“My message to you was that ISIS is a global threat, which requires a global response,”Clooney said to the U.N. on March 8. “And that the response should not be limited to the battlefield: the U.N. should also investigate ISIS’ crimes and make sure that those responsible are brought to justice.”

Meet Kate Morris, Winner Of the EcoChic Design Award 2017

by Chere @ Eluxe Magazine

By Chiara Spagnoli Gabardi Young designers from 46 entered. Sustainable design challenges were set and met. We saw the creations of ten extremely talented shortlisted candidates. And now, after a very tough competition, we can finally announce the winner of this year’s EcoChic Design Award 2017  – meet Kate Morris! Kate won all 3 of the design challenges, including those set by EcoChic Design Award founders Redress, including the Cathay Pacific Uniform Reconstruction Challenge, the Miele Consumer Care Challenge, and the TAL Design to Manufacturing Challenge. But what sealed the winning spot for Kate was her innovative technique of using discarded cones of yarn and cutting old T-shirts into strips to knit with, recycling them into new, colourfully patterned designs. We were lucky enough to catch up with Kate for an exclusive interview about her victory. What initially motivated you to enter the ECDA? I attended a day of workshops on upcycling run by Redress and was so inspired by all the different ways of using waste; I had a set idea of what upcycling was before and this completely opened up my mind set.
