Baby Matters: DAY OR NIGHT? SLEEP OR NAP?

by noreply@blogger.com (Mummy Pris) @ And So Mummy Says..

I read about mummies sharing abt their babies being like the most active in the nights and only start to sleep at daybreak. Omg! I am blessed that such a thing didnt and still hadnt happen to me and Eva!!
So you see, baby sleep patterns are also one of the main issues highlighted by many websites and qn posted in forums.
One of the key thing that has been repeatedly mentioned is how newborns cannot differentiate day and night yet and they tend to hav activities level similar to in the womb i.e when mummy is active in the day, baby inside would tend to sleep due to the rocking motion ; when mummy is resting and sleeping, baby inside starts to wake and kick!
Noting this point as one of my top priority newborn issue, right from the 2nd day of birth we started the following...
During day naps, we will not dim the room and instead allow her to sleep in natural lighting. We also will continue our normal activities without silencing everyone. We wanted her to be able to sleep regardless any kind of background noise. We talk as usual with sometimes TV on and phones were left on normal ringing volume as well. We only take note not to have sudden over loud sounds that could startle even adults.
Maybe because she was a jaundice baby hence she kind of sleep pretty well. She had her fussy times of course and even had a couple nights carrying her to sleep as she wont stop fussing and crying. I couldnt quite make out what she wanted.
She also had her Twilight hours between 11pm to 1am where she wont stop fussing as well. I also couldnt make out what exactly she wanted.
BUT.. all the significant ordeals pass by without me noticing and i think it went pass within days when I havent even quite figure out what to do..
Despite her fussing, it was still apparent that she knows very well when is day and when is night. By 2nd month, she was waking up only like at ard odd 3am? Before was last feed around 11pm or so and 1st feed after 3am normally around 5 to 6am. Basically I was thankful and impressed that she start sleeping through the night this young! (Note! Sleep through night is not as defined like as adult sleep. For babies a straight 5hrs would be considered so!)
So I attribute that quick progress to the daylight and nighttime accustomization. Of course in the night, not only will we ensure that she gets her deserved dimness in the room, she also gets her deserved silence which she doesnt get in the day.
I have come across babies who have to sleep in total dark room with air con and silence. Well, I seriously am not a supporter of that as it will make it so difficult for baby to nap naturally if on-the-go. Eva was doing well. Dozing off well even while waiting in polyclinic with hot weather and brightness with crying babies and kids around. At least she is getting the sleep that she needs.
We establish that so well that on her 1st few days in sch (aka infant care centre) she wouldnt sleep in the nap area as they have it dimmed down. Haha. Oops. So they put her in the play area instead.
Babies are very adaptive. So soon she was alright with the semi dimmed room and so is she alright with our normal.
So new mummies and daddies, do try to do this too for your babies if you wanna gain back your better rested nights sooner!!
Shall share more about Eva sleep patterns next round!

Mummy Matters: BREASTFEEDING (Blocked milk duct)

by noreply@blogger.com (Mummy Pris) @ And So Mummy Says..

Being a new mum, I was amazed at this whole breastfeeding thing especially how Eva was able to suckle within minutes after birth! I guess this skin to skin for the 1st hr after birth is good and hospitals should continue to advocate it!

Breastfeeding is an art!! It is one part of parenthood that is exclusive to mummies and well.. makes you spend alot in preparation for it (read: breastpump, nipple cream, nursing cover, nursing bras, supplements).. and makes you fumble at first... and gives you a magical moment of bonding with your baby..

Breastfeeding also test your endurance! Say you would probably be waking up like you never even sleep before? And you might be wrestling away with your baby to get him or her in right position and the nipple in the right way into the mouth... And doing it discreetly if you are not alone in comfort of your own home.. And you probably be annoyed by all the "how much milk are you yielding?? Is baby having enough milk from you?? how long are you going to breastfeed yr baby??"...

And in my opinion.. Pain in breast was the ultimate I had to endure!!!

My milk only came in on 3rd day after Eva was born and hence I started her on formula bottle feed (tried cup feed etc but found it really tough and I decided to just go for bottle - Tommee Tippee was her first). Meanwhile I still latch on and pump hoping to stimulate the milk production.

I continued the practice even after the milk came in where EBM and formula came in useful when family help to bottle feed. This help was important as it gave me some time to rest and to do other preparation for her. It also gave them especially hubby a chance to watch Eva feed and observe her behaviour. They were also useful in some nights. (Will share in other posts later about how I manage the feedings).

This continues and I always needed to either let her latch on or express in time though its not always possible as she might be fussing and I cannot get to pump. Sometimes we are out with her and we bottle feed her. So breast would often feel engorged after some hours and it would generally be okay after I pump it out. sometimes there would even be lumps which would clear out after I pump out the milk couple times.

One fine day I suddenly felt excruciating pain somewhere near nipple and felt deeper in. The pain was unbearable when pumping that I couldnt bear more than 5 pumps and I had to stop. The pain was like as though my skin was burning! Strange but it did felt like that way. And when i latch on. The pain was equally horrendous though I could bear the pain till Eva finiah feeding. I couldnt understand and guess this is probably engorgement?

Then the pain got so horrible when I was pumping and I checked my nipples for wounds!! I thought it must be Eva who might have injured them. Then I spotted blister like looking stuffs in the nipple with yellow stuffs inside. OMG! I almost freaked out! i thought this is bad!! Pus in nipple??!!! Infection????

I quickly google and fortunately it was not what I thought! It was what they call blocked milk duct! And the yellow stuffs is actually built up of milk inside this skin layer.

I tried using hot towel on the affected breast and massage followed by frequent pumping.. *OUCH* really did feel like hittung someone back then!! I was dreading pumping but if the more I put it off.. the worse it is going to get!

After some perseverence and endurance, the blocked milk duct finally cleared and you can see spaghetti like substance i.e strand of milk that was stuck and coagulated!

Only then did the pain start to subside...

I had a few attacks throughout the 1st few months and the worst period was when the pain was bad enough to disrupt my sleep! I totally couldnt sleep due to the twitching high pain!!

Thankfully each ordeal only last a few days and managed to clear before developing into mastitis.

So new mummies.. endure if you are going thru it!! You will survive with:

1. Latch on baby
2. Breast pump
3. Hot/cold pack that can be heated by placing in hot water or cooled by placing on freezer.
4. Nipple cream for massage

Darkest Period of my Life - From Preggie to Miscarriage

by noreply@blogger.com (Mummy Pris) @ And So Mummy Says..

So I wanted to come back to blogging after my miscarriage last October but was too caught up with everything..

I wanna share about my experience so that other mummies who may face similar situation may find strength and comfort. Also to provide info and insights for those in doubt.

Last August end, I found out I was pregnant!! After about 5 test kits over 2 weeks. I was feeling sore breasts etc and was pretty sure that I was preggie yet negative and negative..

Eventually I tested positive!! And i remember I went shopping at baby fair giving myself green light to get new breastpumps and etc..

Excitedly as the previous round.. informed hubby and made plans to do blood test.. haha we wanted to be very sure.. and results came back Confirmed abt 5 weeks.. and so we made announcements..

Then I went polyclinic to get my referral.. and waited for my KKH appt.. this round.. its at 7 weeks.. compared to Eva time at 10 weeks..

At the first scan..
Sonographer couldnt see baby at all.. only yolk sac n water bag but no fetal pole nor heart beat.. we thought maybe still small..

A week later..
Supposedly a 3mm lil fetal pole was seen..
But hope aint high.. well.. unless LMP was very far off which i doubt.. no matter how i calculate.. It doesnt seem right..

A week later..
Confirmation that no fetal pole can be found.. and shrinkage of water bag observed.. in fact a day before the scan.. i suddenly felt all preggie symptoms vanished..

Doc advised and confirmed a miscarriage.. couldnt put any date to the baby since baby isnt even spotted..

I was calm and I asked all the questions abt the next step.. Which from google.. I know that usually its by natural discharge or procedural clean..

Natural discharge can sometimes not be thorough enuff and will still require the procedure.. so I decided to opt for the procedure.. doc advised for an uterus evacuation.. more details on that in next post..

And I had to decide on immediate admission or following day as doc put me on emergency instead of elective due to waiting time VS need to evac it soon..

Given it was a Thursday.. I decided to do it asap.. so i can be discharged by Friday and take care of Eva over weekend.. Hubby will also jus need drop her at childcare..

I was calm and I stayed rational and logical throughout. I am surprised at how strong I could be. I explained to hubby as a matter of factly why this happened. All the docs i met told me there is no reason.. nothing could have been done to prevent it.. likely a one off case.. and its natural selection since embryo possibly unhealthy to start with..

But regardless.. being a mum.. being the carrier of the baby.. the whole thing was tearing me apart from inside.. i was slowly consumed with grief that I couldnt handle nor face.. its pain.. grief.. guilt.. sadness.. anguish.. everything crushing me deep inside..

I will share more about the procedure in next post.. And what happened following that seems even more challenging...

Mummy Matters: CONFINEMENT - Food and Drinks

by noreply@blogger.com (Mummy Pris) @ And So Mummy Says..

Before Eva was born, we establish the agreement on bathing i.e the general rules of bathing in herbal water. Which turns out to be alright! (Read: http://and-so-mummy-says.blogspot.sg/2014/02/mummy-matters-confinement-bathing.html?m=1

Another aspect of issue definitely is about the food and drinks which is another big dread!! I mean which new mummy needs to be controlled on food and drinks in addition to no bathing!!! I always thought these must be the source of all the postnatal blues...
But seeing my MIL putting in her every effort to make my confinement the best within my comfort zone, I guess one month is just fine...

But you have to be aware of your body conditions and constitution, avoid following the rules blindly. Your body cues are just as important. Check with your gynae when in doubt.

My body constitution is 虚热 prior to pregnancy and that means I cannot take too much tonic else will be too heaty, neither can I take very cooling stuffs like ling yang as it makes my body weak.

No oil, no sugar!
My MIL says cannot cook my food with the usual cooking oil nor sugar. I can only eat food cooked in sesame oil and rock sugar. But hehe she did allow me to take soy sauce. I dont know why or how it works but I know it does feel heaty to be eating all the sesame oil cooked food and definitely expensive. Oh and my MIL actually deep fried some pork chop (i.e pork fillet coated with dry bread crumbs) and fried fries in sesame oil. Nice. Its somewhat added flavour to the otherwise bland food. Either bland or gingery. Nice of her to brainstorm on a delicious menu.

Ginger, Ginger, Ginger!
Number 1 ingredient for confinement food!! Which is absolutely NOT Suitable for me. Do you believe that I gotten through confinement without almost No ginger? My MIL did naturally want to add ginger into all my food and we did communicate beforehand that she will add big pieces to stir fry or steam with fish etc which I am fine. I just didnt want to chew on any ginger slices. Few days after back from hospital, she added ginger into the actually pretty nice red date longan tea which makes it one of the worst drink ever. And i think it made my stomach sick. Either its pure tiredness from lack of sleep and pain or its the ginger. My MIL concluded its the ginger as she noticed I started feeling sick after the ginger. Amd so she stopped adding. Eva also came down with jaundice after 3rd day and we had to bring her to polyclinic checks on wkly basis to monitor the level. Doc advised to stop all confinement foods (much to my joy!) as it is believed that ingredients used actually may cause jaundice in babies esp that I am breastfeeding. Needless to say, it was the best reason to avoid ginger.

No Cold drinks or food
This is pretty obvious as body supposedly is now very cool (liang) so we gave to take warm food. This area I respect since generally we shouldnt be taking in so much cold stuffs. During that period which was the hottest months, it seems tempting to drink cold drinks and stuffs but somehow I enjoyed the hot red date longan tea and warm plain water. Of course I did enjoy room temperature water too when weather was real real hot. But I could feel some coldness running down throat to stomach!
Even fruits, you ought to take them out of fridge and let them return to room temperature before taking them. It is also believed that we shouldnt take oranges and similar citrus fruits else will have phlegm.

No plain water, Only red date longan tea!
OMG! This is one that I cannot accept. I am like a 水桶 (water pail) and I love plain water as much as my darling teh O. So I cannot drink teh O is bad enough and now telling me that I cannot drink plain water? Ok..so I was sweating like a pig everyday even when dressed in tee and shorts as weather is real hot and when dressing Eva up in closed room, I normally finished sweating like I just showered. I dont usually sweat that much and so yes after losing so much water, I just have got to replenish. Needed the fluid for milk production too right? So I did drink when MIL not noticing or when she is out to market. Hehe. I drink warm ones though.
It was said that one of her sis who didnt listen to her and drink loads of plain water, ends up with water swelled face. Haha but for me, it felt contrary. Maybe because I took it in small portions and didnt not gulp it down. And a confession! I did drink a cup of teh O occasionally during the last stage of the confinement. Haha  =P

DOM!
I was prepared to take DOM since its always part of the gifts. I thought just a shot is fine and I did take Yomeishu before at reduced dosage and I felt it did help. So on the 2nd day back from hospital after my bath, MIL poured a shot glass for me. I held my breath and gulp it down. Boy! It's spicy! I mean spicy as in you know when alcohol content is high. The next moment my face flushed and my head throbbed. My world spinned and my eyes swell. That night I had to take a nap early before my night shift with Eva. It was a bad bad horrible few hrs waiting for the effect to pass. I was worried that I may just hyperventilate. MIL got a real scare and decided not to let me have it anymore.  Its once again also to my happiness. Hehe.

Fish & Green Papaya Soup!
I drank this famous soup twice! Okay it tasted alright but seriously drink it while its hot. Haha when its cooled. Omg! The fishy smell.. hmmm.. overpowering.. but when hot, it did taste like a light yet flavourful soup. I dont know if it did help me with the milk production but I guess its nutritious enough. MIL didnt continue giving to me as she finds that my milk was sufficient and she dint want me to engorge too much. Very sweet of her and I appreciate her thoughts!

Milk &Yoghurt!
I thought these were pretty good stuffs to take but couldnt as I cannot take cold stuffs and it really weird to me to take room temp milk or yoghurt. And I only take HL milk hence not taking any mummy milk which can be made warm.  I only started Yakult after confinement.

Neutral food!
Somehow there are certain ingredients that we shouldnt be taking and not quite known to us. It includes certain kind of fish which means not all kind of fish ball or fishcake can be eaten. Certain type of noodles also cannot. Seems like only the older generation will know and even my MIL sometimes check with the hawkers who also helped their daughters or DIL with confinement.

No Sap food eg Yam or Mango
This is what my mum told me to! It is said that taking such food will cause vaginal itch esp when we still have a recovering wound. That sounds scientific enough for me to accept haha though that means I had to miss out on the yam basket in Eva Baby shower buffet. MIL will only discharge me from confinement 40days after birth. So Eva had a early celebration to make it a weekend.

I went through the 40days with some limitations and some no choice. But all in all, I survived! I really appreciate my MIL efforts and I also could feel the effects of it especially through the 1st 2 weeks. After 3rd week, I started to feel normal again and that is also when I started wanting to sneak food and drinks. Haha I even sneak cold Ribena into my thermal flask once!

And I want to emphasize that body cues are important! I asked TCM once who told me that it depends on individual body constitution on whether confinement food will have adverse effect anot but mostly would be fine with them as body will be cold after giving birth and regardless how much heaty food they eat, its fine. Well I am that special one!! I had ulcers after a few days!! Ulcers is when i am heaty so yeah I am not suitable for the full confinement menu. Thank goodness I didnt order those tingkat!

Above are just some of the stuffs I came across and I am definitely one lucky woman already. Comment below if you had ridiculous experience or great experience to share.

Cheers!

$2,500 for full-day infant-care? This is what you get at Tots and Teddies

by Elisa Chia @ Young Parents

Underwriter Winston Loh, 39, was so eager to enrol his daughter in Tots and Teddies, he did not mind paying monthly fees from April though she started at the infant-care centre only in June. He forked out nearly $4,000 more – the monthly fee is about $1,900 after subsidies – just to hold down a […]
