Sick Over the Colour Brown ~ Caramel Colour, and the Health Risks in Our Drinks

by noreply@blogger.com (Tina Naugler) @ Is ignorance really bliss?

Well, today I don't have a product that I am researching and blogging about as is my usual format.  However I am going to mention a particular ingredient that is found in most of our food, known as caramel colour.  It has been all over the news of late, and in this case the idiom 'any publicity is good publicity' may not work in this instance.
Some types of caramel colour has in it an ingredient called 4-Mel or 4-methylimidazole, which is a known carcinogen.  It is especially utilized the soft drink industry.  The COEHHA wants any product that has more than 29 micrograms in it should be labeled as a cancer causing product.  If a product wanted to make the risk of cancer negligible, it should contain no more than 3 micrograms per can of soda.  Studies have shown that certain sodas had in excessive of 29 micrograms of 4-Mel in it.  I don't like soda drinks and I never really have, I can not imagine drinking the amount of sodas that some people drink in a day.  If you or anyone you know drinks pop, this might be an eye opening read.

Antibacterial Soap Warning: May Harm Unborn Fetuses

by noreply@blogger.com (Tina Naugler) @ Is ignorance really bliss?

I have to say that today was a good day.  I was driving to an appointment listening to my local talk radio station CBC when they started to discuss a well used and well known chemical Triclosan.
I have always been a firm believer that we should not be using all of these antibacterial soaps and hand sanitizers.  It is thought to be one of the reason for the development of these superbugs which are becoming resistant to our traditional medications.  Now there is a new wave of proof for avoiding these products, especially if you are pregnant or trying to conceive.  They are said to damage the health of the mother and the unborn baby.  If you are looking to buy any product, look out for these two ingredients in particular Triclosan and Triclocarban.  Here are a couple of articles detailing further the recent findings.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2721751/Pregnant-women-warned-not-use-antibacterial-soaps-fears-chemicals-affect-babies-development.html

For those who are interested I found this site which gives a quick list of all the products that contain Triclosan.  However, it is always best practice to read the ingredient list on the products that you purchase.  Triclosan is one of the ingredients that must be disclosed on the ingredient listing.

Pure Tashodi Ocean Minerals Body Butter ~ Nurture Yourself, Nurture the World

by noreply@blogger.com (Tina Naugler) @ Is ignorance really bliss?

As per our regular routine, my daughter and I headed over to my mom's for a weekly dinner.  It allows time for the grandparents to play with their granddaughter and maintain a healthy relationship with her.  They are not retired and with the daily grind of routines, chores and work its hard to plan time for loved ones.  Especially when it's so easy to let time interfere.  Now my mom knows of my interest in sustainable living and getting back to the healthy and away from the chemicals that seem to inundate so many of our products.  She often asks how my blog is going and what product is under review.  My mom has always encouraged this frame of thought and more often than not has found some new item for me to research, sample and discuss.  This time she was excited about a product that was brand new to our favorite health food store, Pure Tashodi Body Butter.  If any of you are familiar with body butter, they are amazing for dry skin.  They are ubbber rich creams that moisturize and re-hydrates the skin leaving it feel creamy, silky and hydrated.  I generally have really dry skin so body butter to me is heavenly.  Some might complain that it leaves the skin feel greasy, but that's when you throw on a big comfy robe, a pair of slippers, grab a cup of tea or glass of wine and veg in front of the T.V. while your skin happily soaks in all that glorious moisture.  In my youth I used to use the body shop, until I found Say Yes to Carrots body butter and now this one.  It leaves the skin feeling wonderfully soft and with a soft subtle glow.  I have to say that out of the 17 ingredients there are maybe 3 ingredients that are considered to be toxic but with poor and sketchy evidence on 2 of them.  To me this product is as good as gold and pretty much what I have been waiting for.  I will do more research on the Sodium Borate to find out further the toxicity of this ingredient, but overall this product gets an A from me.

Pure Tashodi Ocean Minerals Body Butter

Ingredients:
Helliantus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil
Soja Hispida (SoyBean ) Oil
Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil
Aqua
Natura Beeswax
Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter
Butyrisperinum Parkii (Shea) Butter
Mangifera Indica (Mango) Seed Butter
Emulsifying Wax NF
Sodium Borate
Aloe Barbadenis (Aloe) Leaf Juice
Chamomillia  Recututa (Matricaria) Flower Extact (Chamomile)
Vegetable Glycerin
Eucalptus Globulus Leaf Oil
Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Oil
Mentha Viridis (Spearmint) Leaf Oil
Lactobacillius Ferment

Description:

Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil: it is used as an emollient.  It is considered to be gentle and safe for use in cosmetics, you will also find it in an array of food products.  It is not considered to be toxic to humans or to the environment.

Soja Hispida (SoyBean ) Oil: is a species of legume found in Esat Asia.  It is used as a skin conditioning agent and fragrance ingredient  There has been debate over the safety of soybeans because they contain isoflavones known as genistein and daidzen which are phytoestrogens or in other words estrogen.  There have been studies done that have shown that consuming soy does not alter levels of testosterone or estrogen in men, nor does it have any affect of sperm levels.  As well, studies have shown that consuming moderate levels of soy does not present a risk to women with breast cancer.  Now that I say that, it is not recommended that soy supplements be used.  In the case of skin care products, soy is seen to be very safe and benign.  http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredient/702679/GLYCINE_SOJA_%28SOYBEAN%29_OIL/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soybean

Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil:  this ingredient is extracted from seeds of a desert shrub located in California and Mexico areas.  It is used as a skin conditioning agent and as a viscosity controller.  It is considered to be safe for humans and for the environment.

Aqua: is what we drink, about 60% of our bodies are made up of water. When clean it is a safe and necessary part of life.

Natura Beeswax: is the purified wax from the honeycomb of the bee. It is used as a skin conditioning agent, emulsion stabilizer, fragrance ingredient and viscosity increasing agent.  It is considered to be safe for humans and safe for the environment.  However it is not considered to be vegan according to PETA.

Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter: this ingredient is extracted from the Thobroma cacao tree which is native to North and Central America.  It is used as a fragrance ingredient and as a skin conditioning agent.  It is considered to be of low toxicity and safe for humans and the environment.

Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter: Now this is a neat product.  Shea butter is derived fro the seeds of the African Shea Tree.  It acts as thickening agent as well as a skin conditioner.  This product is preferred because it does not turn into a soap as other fatty oils do.  It is considered a natural moisturizing factor because of its close resemblance to the lipid content of human skin.  It helps to regenerate skin, block out bacteria and naturally absorbs UVB rays to protect the skin from the sun. It is  safe to use and considered non toxic.  However do to the fact that it is a nut people with nut allergies need to beware.

Mangifera Indica (Mango) Seed Butter:  is fat obtained from the seed of the mango.  It is used as a skin conditioning agent.  It is considered to be safe and non toxic for both humans and the environment.

Emulsifying Wax NF:  is a mixture of plant or petroleum based wax converted into an emulsion using detergents. There is some concern over the toxicity of this ingredient as it may be derived from petroleum.. There is also concerns over the possibility of ingredients not fully labeled or the the identity being unknown.

Sodium Borate: is also known as Borax, which is a naturally occurring mineral based on the element boron. It is used as a buffering agent and a pH Adjuster.  There are some heavy concerns regarding this ingredient.   It is not safe to use on infant skin. It is also an ingredient that is restricted in cosmetics.  There is also a concern with multiple exposure.  There is evidence to suggest it is a reproductive toxin as well as a non reproductive organ system toxin.  It is not considered to be an environmental toxin.

Aloe Barbandensis (Aloe) Leaf Juice: Also known as Aloe Vera   It is used for it's rejuvenating and healing/soothing properties.  Can cause diarrhea if too much is ingested.  Photo toxicity and  have been reported through topical application.  Though that could be linked to an allergic reaction, the information surrounding this information is very limited.  Overall, aloe appears to be of low toxicity, low environmental toxicity and not carcinogenic.

Chamomillia  Recututa (Matricaria) Flower Extact (Chamomile): is also known as chamomile and is a relative of ragweed, people with ragweed allergies may have sensitivities towards chamomile.  It has many interesting healing properties.  it is a bactericide, anti-inflammatory and anti-mutagenic as well as antimicrobial.

Vegetable Glycerin: is pretty benign and of low toxicity.  It is used in products mainly because it is effective at improving the smoothness of the product and is a good lubricant.  It is often derived from vegetable oils such as coconut or soy beans.

Eucalptus Globulus Leaf Oil:  This is an evergreen tree that grows native in Australia but can be found in different parts of the world.  They are thought to be a fire hazard in parts of California.  It has many uses ranging from dentistry to blood sugar and anti-bacterial/fungi properties.  It is thought to be of low toxicity to humans and the environment
.
Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Oil:  this is the oils that have been obtained from the fresh peels of lemon.  It is used as a fragrance ingredient, a tonic, and an astringent.  According to the EWG it has been banned or found to be unsafe for the use in cosemetics, although there seems to be limited evidence as to why this is the case since it is not considered to be carcinogenic or an organ system toxin.  Nor is it considered to be harmful to the environment.
http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredient/717951/CITRUS_MEDICA_LIMONUM_%28LEMON%29_PEEL_OIL/

Mentha Viridis (Spearmint) Leaf Oil:  as the name suggests this is the oils derived from the dried tops and leaves of the Mentha viridis.  It is used as a fragrance ingredient, and astringent, and skin conditioning agent.  It is considered to be safe and non toxic to both humans and the environment.

Lactobacillius Ferment: this is also known as lactic acid fermentation.  This is one of the key ingredients in sauerkraut and yogurt.  It is used as a skin conditioning agent.  It is not considered to be toxic to humans or the environment.

Aveeno Baby

by noreply@blogger.com (Tina Naugler) @ Is ignorance really bliss?

I was out shopping the other week with my toddler.  We needed a few things for our household.  One of those things was skin cream for my little girl.  The winter months are hard on her delicate little skin.  I normally get the Live Clean lotion for her.  It is a healthier choice and I can feel good about putting it one her skin.  Well I grabbed a bottle and we carried on she was getting fussy as it was getting late.  I quickly got the rest of the products that we needed and went to the check out.  I did not even notice that I grabbed Aveeno Baby Lotion instead of my Live Clean Lotion until I got home and unloaded our bags.  I figured it was too late to return it and I noticed that there was the Pediatrician Recommended stamp of approval on the bottle.  I thought what the heck and I started to use it.  The cream was not so bad, it smelled nice and was very creamy and applied well to the skin.  Her skin seemed to enjoy it as the dry spots began to slowly disappear.  When I checked out the back to read the ingredients I was not to happy to find out that they use some pretty harsh ingredients.
I noticed that 4 out of the 11 ingredients listed are considered to be toxic.  Though I was happy to see that there were no parabens.  Now I want to get back to the part about being Pediatricians Recommended, I became curious about this and thought I would look further into what exactly this meant.  Well apparently nothing.  Its just marketing.  It turns out that very little of these products are endorsed by the AAP.  Through my research I found this article which was simple and summarised everything neatly.

Aveeno Baby Fragrance Free Daily Lotion with Natural Colloidal Oatmeal Moisturisers

Ingredients:

Water (eau)
Glycerine
Disteraryldimonium Chloride
Petrolatum
Isopropyl Palmitate
Cetyl Alcohol
Dimethicone
Colloidal Oatmeal
Allantoin
Benzyl Alcohol
Sodium Chloride

Description:

Water:
  H2O, the stuff we drink.

Glycerin: is pretty benign and of low toxicity.  It is used in products mainly because it is affective at improving the smoothness of the product and is a good lubricant.  Glycerin is a byproduct of bio-diesel.  However, all you vegans take note.  This form is very expensive, therefore it is more often derived from animal fats such as beef and vegetable oils such as coconut or soy beans.  Therefore some products that list glycerin in their ingredients may not be vegan.

Disteraryldimonium Chloride: this is a quaternary ammonium salt and is used as an anti-static agent as well as a conditioning agent.  It is considered to be a human toxicant or allergen.  It is a skin, lung and eye irritant. It is also a wildlife and environmental toxin.

Petrolatum:  this is a combinations of hydrocarbons derived from petroleum.  It is used as a conditioning agent, and skin protectant. It is a controlled or restricted ingredient.  It is a known non-reproductive system organ toxin and is deemed by the EWG as being harmful. There is also concerns of contamination with other chemicals through the creation process of this ingredient.
http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredient/704786/PETROLATUM/

Isopropyl Palmitate: this is an ester of isopropyl alcohol and palmitic acid.  It is used as a conditioning agent, fragrance ingredient and anti-static agent.  It appears to be fairly begin in toxicity.

Cetyl Alcohol: Here is an interesting fact the name cetyl is derived from whale oil which was the original source of cetyl.  Now it is derived from petroleum or vegetable oils such as coconut.  It is used in personal care products as a thickening agent or in shampoos as an emulsifier.  In my research, there seemed to be very little information on the toxicity of cetyl alcohol, on either the environment, animals or humans.  The only information I found was the evidence of skin irriation and minor allergies causing rashes.  Most information seemed to deem cetyl alcohol safe to use and practically non toxic.

Dimethicone: also known as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) which is a silicone oil.  It is used in shampoos to lubricate hair and make it easier to comb and adds shine.  In creams it acts as a skin protectant and an emulsifier.  The FDA has deemed it safe to use.  However most people have heard of the horror stories with silicone breast implants leading companies to switch to saline filled implants.  Other side effects linked to PDMS include allergic reactions from mild to severe as well as a worsening in dryness.  Although the data is limited, it appears to also cause non-reproductive toxicity as well as links to environmental toxicity due to the toxins being bioaccummulative.  This means it builds up and builds up in our soils and sediments.

Colloidal Oatmeal : this is an oatmeal that has been finely grounded.  It is used as a skin protecting agent, bulking agent adn absorbant.  It is considered to be very safe and not toxic to humans or to the environment.

Allantoin:  is a naturally occuring nirogenous compound.  It is used as a skin conditioning agent.  Vegans beware, this product may be derived from animals.  It is not considered to be toxic to humans or to the environment.

Benzyl Alcohol:  is both a naturally occuring, as well as a synthetic compound.  It is used as a preservative and a solvent.  It is considered to be a workplace hazzard, an immunotoxin, contact allergen, and an organ system toxin.  An ingredient best to avoid.

Sodium Chloride: is your everyday salt.  It is not considered to be toxic and is used as a cleansing agent as well as a thickener.

Botanicals, The New Trend. Leaving Chemicals Out of the Mix.

by noreply@blogger.com (Tina Naugler) @ Is ignorance really bliss?

I came across this article today while reading the news, and trying to kill a bit of time.  Luckily for me it was the kind of news I love to hear.  Apparently the new trend for this year are natural botanicals  This is according to an article in Fox News.   The harsh chemicals, it seems, are slowly being left to the wayside in favour of the more gentle and soothing ingredients found in nature.  Rather than those created in laboratories, ingredients such as Rooibos tea, and the sausage tree found in Africa are being utilized for their favourable properties.  This is great news, I am hoping that this wave of insurgence for natural ingredients will stay.  Back to basics, leaving the chemicals aside.  Check out this article for more details.

Redken Signature look Fashion Waves 07 Texturizing Sea Spray

by noreply@blogger.com (Tina Naugler) @ Is ignorance really bliss?

My parents and I have a tradition.  Every week my daughter and I go over to their house for dinner.  It gives them a chance to see their granddaughter, and play with her for a few hours.  As is customary, I get to take home and peruse the magazines that my Mom buys and has finished reading... reduce, reuse and recycle! When I got home and the house was quiet, I scanned through them.  I read a few of the articles, what exercise is best for killer arms and so forth, than I came across a picture of a woman with a great haircut.  It was a short cut, a bit edgy, and what I had been looking for in a style.  It was providence, so of course I tore out the page and made an appointment with my hair stylist, and bought the necessary hair product to continue with the style on my own.  I was feeling pretty good about myself, (and a bit worried about what my spouse would say when he got home and found out I had razored half my hair off!) Besides that I was feeling youthful, vivacious and a bit punky, and definitely had a new spring to my step.  I went about my day and figured I would use my new hair product for my blog.  I had scanned the ingredients and the store and figured it was a pretty good (or bad) one to write about.
However one thing passed my attention at the hair salon, and that was the fact that it had salt from the Dead Sea  in it.  I generally try to stay away from Redken products because they are pretty heavily laced with nasty ingredients.  I broke that rule this time, in response to the excitement of my new look I suppose.  I really have no excuse.  Beyond that however, had I realised at the time it contained ingredients for the Dead Sea, I would have politely declined.  I made the pact with myself a long time ago that I would boycott anything with Dead Sea salt in it.
This is why:  The Dead Sea is depleting approximately 1 meter or 3.3 feet per year.  It is believed that it will no longer exist by 2050.  There are some people say that water is not extracted from the Dead Sea but that is in fact untrue. The Ein Bokek hotel pumps water out of the Dead Sea to fill up the artificial sea in front of it where the Dead Sea once lay but has now dried up. It is in a terrible state and is an environmental disaster.  Water's have been needlessly redirected away from the Dead Sea via the Jordan River.  It is being used recklessly by all parties and companies are exploiting it continually for their own financial gain.  There are a few groups that are trying to gain cooperation between the countries that encase it.
Until the Dead Sea is protected and people are working together to save it, I refuse to endorse, encourage, promote or support products containing ingredients from the dead sea.  Even beyond that, Redken is known for using some harsh chemicals in their products. When there are so many alternatives that use less toxic ingredients, why settle? To prove my point, in this particular product, 13 out of 19 ingredients are considered to be toxic. Another reason to find an alternative.
Here are a few for those that are interested in what alternatives are available.

To read more about the Dead Sea, check out this great article from the Smithsonian.

Description:

Aqua:
is water and pretty self explanatory.

Magnesium Sulfate: is also known as Epson Salts.  It is a mineral, and is used as a hair conditioning agent and bulking agent.  It is considered to be safe for humans and the environment.

Sodium Chloride:
is your everyday salt.  It is not considered to be toxic and is used as a cleansing agent as well as a thickener.

Maris Sal/Sea Salt:  Is salt from the dead sea.  The water in the dead sea is said to contain 27% of different types of salt, whereas the oceans contain only 3%.  It is also higher in minerals.  The dead sea is also being depleted at astronomical rates due to companies using the special water in products.  There are sink holes that could swallow you whole. But don't worry if it does they will name the sink hole after you.  Anything that contains water from the dead sea should be baned.  It is an environmental catastrophe.

Phenoxyethanol
: Is a fairly new ingredient, it is a glycol either and is used as a bactericide.  It is generally considered safer then the traditional formaldehyde releasing agents, however the FDA has stated that it can depress the central nervous system which could cause vomiting, diarrhoea and can cause dehydration in infants.  There have been concerns of this product being carcinogenic due to the ingredients it is derived from.

Polysorbate 20:
is a sorbitol that has been treated with ethylene oxide.  It is used as an emulsifier, a fragrance and a surfactant.  In most studies it is defined as being of low toxicity.  However ethylene oxide is a known carcinogen.  Other concerns related to ethylene oxide are endocrine disruption, organ toxicity, skin irritation and in high doses reproductive and developmental toxicity.

Parfum (Fragrance):  Used to make the product smell nice.  Though it is not considered to be harmful or a toxin, it does cause some individuals to develop headaches if it is labelled that it is derived from natural sources. However, the fragrance industry uses up to 3000 ingredients, most of which are synthetic, some 900 of which were identified as toxic. However, the industry is not required to disclose ingredients of fragrances and perfumes on their labels due to trade secrecy considerations. So you don't know what mix of chemicals you are receiving. Some of them are headaches causing, immunosystem toxic, carcinogenic, and mutagenic.

Isoceteth-20: is a polyethylene ether of isocetyl alcohol.  It is used as an emulsifying agent a surfactant. This ingredient does not appear to have been detected in human tissue or urine.  From my research it appears to be of low toxicity, does not appear to be an environmental toxin, and is not bioaccumulative or persistent.

Potassium Sorbate: this ingredient is a postassium salt  of sorbic acid it is a naturally occurring compound.  It is used as a preservative.  It is a known human allergen.  It is also thought to be a non-reproductive organ system toxin.  It is deemed safe to use in food however in limited concentration.

Benzyl Salicylate: This ingredient is an ester of benzyl alcohol and salicylic acid.  It is used as an ultraviolet light absorber and a fragrance ingredient.  It is a known human skin allergen and immune system toxin.  It is a known hormone disruptor, and an environmental toxin.

Benzyl Alcohol:  is both a naturally occurring, as well as a synthetic compound.  It is used as a preservative and a solvent.  It is considered to be a workplace hazard, an immunotoxin, contact allergen, and an organ system toxin.  An ingredient best to avoid.

Citric acid: This is in many skin care products especially in the anti-ageing products as an alpha hydroxy.  It acts as a chelating agent, fragrance ingredient, a pH adjuster, buffer and masking.  It is not considered to be an environmental toxin, but there are concerns with broad systemic toxicity and skin irritation.

Linalool:
Is a naturally occurring terpene alcohol found in a number of spice plants and flowers.  It is used as a masking agent and perfume.  It is also used as an insecticide.
Linalool gradually breaks down when in contact with oxygen, forming an oxidized by-product that may cause allergic reactions such as eczema in some individuals.  It is also considered to be a broad systemic toxin, a mutagen, and a human immune system toxin.

Geraniol: is a lipid and an alcohol.  It is derived from citronella oil, rose oil and palmarosa oil.  It is used in cosmetics and personal care products as a fragrance ingredient. It is a known human immune system toxicant and is one of the EU's Banned and Restricted Fragrances.  Now as I write this I want to make it clear that the information surrounding this seems pretty limited.  The most information I have found against this ingredient is that it is an allergen for those who suffer from perfumes.  I am not sure who it was that funded the banned list and why citronella was on it.  However I will keep looking.  As far as my research has lead, it appears to be a fairly good ingredient, unlike a lot of the chemical ones that appear on most labels.  If anyone has any other thoughts, enlightenment or information on this ingredient, please leave a comment.

Hydroxycitronellal:  Is a perfume ingredient providing a floral scent.  It is considered to be a skin irritant and toxin causing dermatitis.  It is also considered to be an organ toxin.

Citral:  Is present in many plants including lemon mertyle.  Although it is naturally occurring it is manufactured synthetically to sell in mass quantities.  It is used as a fragrance ingredient.  It is considered to be an allergen and an irritant.  It is not considered to be an environmental toxin.

Limonene: is a colourless liquid hydrocarbon (compound consisting of hydrogen and carbon) and is  classified as a cyclic terpene.  It takes its name from the lemon or lemon rind, which contains considerable amounts of this compound, which contributes to their odour of citrus or oranges.  Thus it is used as a fragrance ingredient.  It is considered to be a skin irritant as well as a respiratory irritant.  There have been studies showing it causes tumours in small rodents but it appears that scientists are interested in its anti-cancer fighting properties.

Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone:  This is a synthetic compound and is used as a fragrance ingredient.  However it has been banned from fragrances/colognes by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA).  It is a known irritant and human allergen.  It is also thought to be an environmental toxin.

Algae/Algae Extract:  This ingredient can contain a variety of different types of species of algae and may even differ between manufacturers.  It is used as a skin-conditioning agent and a humectant.  It is considered to be safe for both humans and the environment.
